Elbridge's town codes office, which also works for the village, last month cited the Elbridge Fire Department for violating the local unregistered vehicle law.
The violation notice, issued July 24, gave the village seven days to remove the car or face legal action.
The fire station is on village land. The department uses the cars for training in automotive firefighting and accident rescues.
The citation caused a serious pothole in the road to municipal cooperation.
It was just in June that the village and town reached a deal for the town code office to cover the village.
In another twist, Deputy Codes Officer Tim Ganey is a member of the fire department.
After getting the citation, Mayor Dennis Pelmear told Code Officer Jeffrey Bartoszewski to stop issuing remedy demands until, among other things, the village could come up with a reasonable period for compliance.
He said the citation did not give the village enough time and Fire Chief James English said most scrap yards don't want to take vehicles.
The board took interim action at its meeting Monday. The violation needs to be corrected within 30 days if it is not safety-related, within five to 10 days if it is.
Bartoszewski, contacted after the meeting, said Pelmear had been told of the violation a week before the citation was issued.
Both he and Pelmear maintained their differences were minor and could be easily corrected.
Still, Bartoszewski stood by his action.
"A day before, we cited one resident of the town for too many unregistered vehicles," he said. "You can't expect a resident to follow the law if the village doesn't."
