OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- The city announced Monday it will close The Jack London Square Fire Station and decommission a fireboat because negotiations with union leaders fell apart.
The station's 13 employees have already been transferred to other stations, said City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente. An unnamed fire truck company also will be closed by Aug. 15, and another fire station will get the ax next July.
De La Fuente said the stations would have stayed open if the firefighters' union had agreed to pay an additional 3 percent into their pension plans, a request made of all four unions representing city employees. So far, only Local 21 has agreed to the proposal.
But Fire Capt. Bruce Nielsen, a member of the union's executive board, said firefighters already pay into their pension plans. In exchange for an additional 3 percent contribution the union wanted the city to restore the engine company that was cut in January and end the "flexible deployment" plan that has engine companies throughout the city closed on a rotating basis.
