ROCKAWAY, N.J. -- A Brooklyn, N.Y., woman was killed and another person injured when their car was struck by a rotted tree brought down by a wind gust.

State police said Marnel Lafontant, 49, suffered massive head injuries when the tree, located 34 feet off the right shoulder of Interstate 80, struck and crushed the eastbound car's roof about 1:40 p.m.

The car then veered off the road and struck a guardrail along the right side of the road.

Lafontant was pronounced dead at the scene by the Morris County medical examiner.

State police said a front seat passenger, Majorie Lafontant, 16, suffered a broken neck and was taken to Morristown Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Officials at the hospital said the teen's family requested no information about her condition be released.

State police were unable to provide the teen's relation to the driver.
