Well the traditional hierarchy in my volly FD is as follows:

    Chief
    Assistant Chief
    Captain
    Lieutenant
    MPO
    Firefighter
    Probie

As Chief I prefer to look at it this way in the order of actual importance:

    Firefighter
    MPO
    Lieutenant
    Captain
    A/C
    Chief

It has always been my contention that if as a chief your primary job is to make the troops look good, you make the FD look good, and maybe by trickle down even make yourself look good too! If as an officer your primary goal is to make youself look good it isn't the best for the organization.

    Chief...
Leaps tall buildings with a single bound
Is more powerful than a ladder truck
Is faster than a speeding bullet
    Walks on water
    Gives policy to God

    Deputy Chief...
Leaps short buildings with a single bound
Is more powerful than a pumper
Is just as fast as a speeding bullet
Walks on water if sea is calm
    Talks with God

    Assistant Chief...
Leaps short buildings with a running start and favorable winds
Is almost as powerful as a pumper
Is faster than a speeding BB
Walks on water in indoor swimming pools
Talks with God if special request is approved

    Battalion Chief...
    Barely clears straw huts
    Loses tug-of-war with pumpers
    Can fire a speeding bullet
    Swims well
    Is occasionally addressed by God

    Captain...
Makes high marks on buildings when trying to leap them
Is run over by a pumper
Can sometimes handle a gun without inflicting self-injury
    Dog paddles in swimming pools
    Talks with animals

    Lieutenant...
Runs into buildings when trying to leap them
Recognizes pumpers two out of three times
Is not allowed to use guns
Can stay afloat if properly instructed in the use of a life jacket
    Talks to walls

    Fire Fighter...
Lifts buildings and walks under them
Kicks fire engines and equipment out of the way
Catches speeding bullets in his teeth and eats them
Freezes water with a single glance
    He is God

    Well, Let's See...........

From the top down, WITHIN the Volunteer Dept.....

    Chief
    Asst. Chief
    Deputy Chief
    Capts.
    Lts.
    F/Fs.

And now, our County Wide operation.......

    County Fire Chief
    County Deputy Chief
County Asst Chiefs (some Career, some Volunteer)
    VFD Chief
    VFD Asst Chief
    VFD Deputy Chief
County Battalion Chiefs (some Career, some Volunteer)
    Capts. (Career or volunteer)
    Lts. (Career or Volunteer)
    F/Fs. (Career or Volunteer)

When the rank is equal, the person from the first due station is in charge. I know that this would not work everywhere, but we have few problems with it, and those are usually younger "Ego trips". Stay Safe....

Seriously though, how does a class c differ from others?
well to be honest the only class c firefighter i know of for sure is my dad, who's on the fire police these days. i really dont know what makes someone a class c firefighter, but i'd have to assume it's mostly fire police and some of the older guys who have let the physicals and what not slide. my dad doesnt partake in the firefighting operations anymore, he does drive on occasion. i guess class c means stay away from the fire.

Same question here, what is a Class C firefighter???

This is how is works here:

    *Explorer
*Honorary member- given to honored retired members
*Associate member- does nothing but observe, and I don't know of any.
    *Auxillary member
    *Probationary Firefighter
    *Firefighter
*Sr. Firefighter- if officer not present
*Lieutenant- there are two, which ever one is first on scene takes command until relieved by higher ranking officer.
    *Captain
    *Asst. Chief
    *Chief
