BASTROP, La. (AP) - The driver of the Bastrop firetruck that
crashed into a car, killing a four-year-old child, resigned
Thursday.
The accident also critically injured another toddler.
Lt. Dawson Blackard was ticketed for running a red light and
placed on paid administrative leave after the April accident.
Bastrop Fire Chief Willie Mckee described Blackard as a
dedicated public servant. McKee said he believes that Blackard was
tormented by the accident, which prompted him to hand in his
resignation.
A State Police report states the driver of the car carrying the
children is also responsible because the children were not properly
restrained in their car seats.
