On March 8th 2003, Lt.Tom Welch Chicago Fire Department Truck Co. 51 was getting into his car after having dinner out with his wife when a DRUNK DRIVER smashed into him. Lt.Welch suffered some devastating injuries. The DRUNK DRIVER took off but was later arrested. After nearly 4 heroic months of fighting the "good fight" Lt. Tom Welch died at home with his family by his side. Lt. Welch was a 24 year veteran who was loved and respected by his peers. He was a "good fireman", but more importantly to those who knew him, he was a devoted family man and friend. ANOTHER WASTE brought to you courtesy of a DRUNK DRIVER.

My condolences go out to his family, i hope they stay strong. It's always the innocent that get killed and not the drunk driver. the drunk driver should have died for his stupid mistake. OMFG it just makes me so mad that someone would drive drunk!Comment

Mikey...on behalf of Marlborough Firefighters Local 1714, IAFF/PFFM and the Marlborough FD, please accept our condolences on the passing of Lt. Tom Welch....rest in peace, brother....
I do hope that the charges against the driver have been upgraded to vehicular homicide. Can you keep us updated?"The education of a firefighter and the continued education of a firefighter is what makes "real" firefighters. Continuous skill development is the core of progressive firefighting. We learn by doing and doing it again and again, both on the training ground and the fireground."
