  • The Line's Delayed...Now What???

You're on the top floor landing of an attached 4 story frame building. The fire's on the top floor and you popped the door to the apartment and found heavy fire at the door. A quick probe of the doorway and you're forced back and close the door.
The line is being stretched by two members and will be slightly delayed. There are no other doors on the top floor.
For the next 60-90 seconds, what will you be doing?

Radio IC to let them know situation. Check apartment on both sides. Then go down and help bring hose up.

Go to the floor below and check the apartment layout of one that mirrors the fire apartment to get an idea of the layout, also note where the windows are located. This should give a good view of the size of the apartment and depth just in case you have to bail.

          Recon Baby!

In a minute to minute and a half as you propose - I would put the advantage on the good guys side. Visit with the neighbors of the fire apt to make sure they are aware of the party. You never know who might be sleeping. Other variables play in obviously such as time of day, but someone may still be in there. Check your egress routes, extensions. Where is your partner? In this phase of the battle, it may be easy to get seperated because you don't have the common thread(hoseline) keeping you together. Teamwork, training, and discipline will take care of you right now. Hopefully, by the time your done with these tasks, you got water!
