  • FDNY EMS vs. Private Hospital EMS

Okay, now I know that this question might be better suited for the EMS General Forum but I was hoping to get some of the FDNY brothers to answer.

I have yet to find out how EMS is dispatched in NYC. Does FDNY take the calls unless there are no units available? Do the Hospitals do just private line calls? I've always been curious about this topic but have never been able to get an answer.

No clue. Other than CFR Engines, we have nothing to do with EMS.

I could be wrong but I believe ambulances get dispatched based upon avalibility. Whether it's FDNY or private they are all entered into the computer based upon coverage area. When there's a job, the next avalible gets dispatched, when it free's up it goes on the bottom of the list.

If anyone has corrections or more specifics, feel free to elaborate.

Each hospital has its own first due territory that they are responsible for and SFD is correct the dispatch is based on availability, but you are not dumped to the bottom of the list you are put in service for your area. I've ridden with some friends who work for private companies and often when we arrived or were on scene an FDNY bus was there or was sent on a back up. They play a major roll in the system for the city, in fact at one point there was even talk by some of the gods that they one day saw the system going more into the private hosp EMS arena. But that was a few years ago and it never panned out. There are many private hosp. in the city that run buses, and most of them I know of are in Manhatten.
