What is FDNY's policy on transfering? I am interested because of the current situation w/ the probie who was AQUITTED yet his brother firefighters refuse to work w/ him. This man was afforded his Constitutional rights and was aquitted (in other words he was NOT proved guilty aka..INNOCENT)I don't justify his actions nor will I question his actions because I was not there, but I am curious if those that are transferring are being given special treatment. And if they are following the regular SOP's for transfering why does it have to turn into a racial thing. If they didnt want to work w/ him becuase of the way he ties his shoes would they make a big deal out of it?

Transfers in the FDNY depend on several factors: Normally when a transfer request is submitted, it is done so with the current Company Commanders OK, plus that of the Battalion Commander. Preceeding the application, most applicants are first reviewed by the Company Commander of the company the applicant wishes to transfer to, based on their Ok or approval, the process begins. Then it's a matter of an opening in the future company, and the amount of points the applicant has, as to when he goes. Points are logged for time in the job, how busy your unit is, amount of sick leave accumulated. Lastly an applicant can be bumped by another with more points. Most Company Commanders have what is unofficially known as a waiting list...using it when their man-power requires another member(s).
Transfers can occur almost immediately, and usually with disciplinary action(fines) should a member become involved in a sexual harrassment type situation. In this case, the applicant is guaranteed a transfer, but not necessarily to where they want to go.
Transfers due to racial or other personality conflicts do occur, and usually before the case blows out of porportion, the applicant again may or may not get to go where they want.....but their sure to move.
Transfers can also occur for emergency reasons, ex: a Firefighters family member may require the firefighter to be close at hand for an unsuspecting event, therefor they may be transfered upon request to a Company nearer their residence....providing the member is not a problem child. Hope this helps.....FDNYRR"All gave some...Some gave all!"

This is similar to the firefighters in Metro-Dade not wanting to work with the 3 "alleged firefighters" who refused to ride the truck because of the "oppressive" American Flag, yet when they refused to work with them all hell broke loose.
There is a difference here...the probie in question did not scream "discrimination!" and backpedal when pressed for reasons. He was tried and acquitted in a court of law by a jury of his peers in the Amidou Diallo case. He was on the FD list and took the opportunity. I hope that he has a long and safe career with the FDNY.
Not to stir up a hornet's nest, but I wonder if the two firefighters requesting transfers would be doing it if the the probie in question was of African-American descent?"The education of a firefighter and the continued education of a firefighter is what makes "real" firefighters. Continuous skill development is the core of progressive firefighting. We learn by doing and doing it again and again, both on the training ground and the fireground."

I guess this answer is basically for the Lt in E229. A question was asked and I-specifically answered it correctly and in an unbiasied nature. I hope your reference to "the posts above" does not include my answer, or if indeed it does......I think you should ask why your here, as oppossed to the postings?
I tried to read between the lines, but alas.....there is nothing to read. You may not agree with some posters...who does....but to say a
"all" are irrelevant, Geeze Lou a forum is like a giant Firehouse kitchen, where anything and everything goes."All gave some...Some gave all!"

DUDE...he's FDNY, how dare you talk about the goings on in his department....I'm surprised he's even a member of this forum, what with all these second class paid and (god forbid) volunteer firefighters on this thing...Thanks for gracing us with your presence Leu, maybe you can teach us all how to fight fires next...
Boy, I'm gonna get my *** torn out for that one...but It's all over the news, why can't we talk about it??? What makes an FDNY guy better than anyone else? I'm not an FDNY hater, my DAD is FDNY, but I hate the FDNY attitude...sorry you had to get in the way Leu...

Let's see if I can put something between the lines:
Most, if not all the "FACTS" people are using to form an opinion are based on media accounts of what was/is going on. From what I've seen the media print has distorted this thing way beyond the facts.
My comment only stated, "I don't think any of the above posts were made by anyone with even a remote idea of the issues". I was not challenging their opinions or FDNYRR's explanation of the transfer policy, (which is pretty accurate). I only tried to state, the issues, if gleened from the press, are not complete or accurate.
As for not thinking it belongs here, some other threads have seen members express their opinion on matters, only to have those opinions sent to that posters superiors. I see this issue being ripe for a member of the boards to make a statement or opinion that could come back to haunt them.

CIFD......I am retired FDNY, and I respect "always" the rank if not necessarily the man or their opinions. I do not respect anyone generally berating an entire Dept due to the remarks of an individual. I am a 28 yr vet with FDNY-Rescues and Squads, I think the term "dude" does not benefit my presence.........As far as Lt from E 229, NOW I can read between the lines, and do-so understand where your coming from. Very simply a mis-understanding. Thus the reason you check your posts before hitting add reply. I agree the Media has always sucked.....that's why my post was made factually not emotionally!"All gave some...Some gave all!"

CIFD....
I need some help from you. After reading your poignant reprimand of the Brooklyn LT and being struck by the power of your wisdom, I have had a moment of clarity. Its clear to me now that my brothers are truly evil and that I must immediately begin a crusade to rid Gotham of this scourge.
What better place to start than with the man in the mirror?
I thought the best way to ensure that my self-cleansing efforts would be successful would be to get some advice from a guy who obviously has the right attitude towards the job, the willingness to point out the shortcomings of others (no matter how painful) and the guts to stand up to the FDNY monster, with only his wits to protect him.
Please help me take the first, difficult steps towards fire department success and the universal acceptance you have obviously attained by answering a few simple questions.
1. What exactly is the FDNY attitude? After all, its going to be hard to exorcise this demon if I don't yet know what he looks like.
2. What is the CIFD attitude? The first thing I'm going to need after dumping all these heinous qualities is a fresh start. Without the blueprint for the perfect FD attitude, I could easily regress into the same old act.
3. Do you really think everyone hates us? I know this sounds childish but... I just feel suddenly awkward. They seemed so nice when they all came here to visit. Maybe they just felt sorry for us. I hope our attitude wasn't what made them leave... (I thought it might have been the Ziti). Call a couple of cool firemen and ask them if they like us or not, (don't tell them I told you to ask) and then call me back and tell me what they said.
I guess thats it for now. Reply back soon. I'm desperate. I guess when you realize that you had the key to life all wrong, you just want to fix yourself as soon as possible.
Call me soon... don't forget.

Hey South Bronx.........thanks for the support. I don't know why but a lot of non-NY'rs are under the impression "we" FDNY condesend to them. Not so......brothers and sisters, I don't know squat about Grain Elevators, nor 10,000 Acre Wildfires, so I and may I say "we" do not know all. Most of FDNY respect others in the trade, except for those few "Salty Types" with under five years on the job, and there are plenty of LODD to remind us........Nationwide!!!!!!!!!!! CIFD,
I think you need to take a hard look at yourself after those comments. You say your dad is in FDNY? Well, I KNOW that the brothers down there look out for each other's families. Growing up I am sure you must have socialized with some of the very guys you say have an "attitude." I am curious to know why you have so much disgust for such a fine bunch of people. Surely, you must have visited a FDNY firehouse in your distinguished career. Anyone that has knows that what you say is a falsehood. I am a VOLLIE and have never been talked down to by any FDNY member. People like E229LT, SouthBronx, E40L35, 51TruckK, and FDNYRR can teach us all something. It makes me wonder if you tried to get on the job down there and were not able to. That might explain the sour grapes.Stay safe and stop bumping your head like that.

I have followed the wrong path, I deeply admire the FDNY and its members, most of all, those here on this forum. But I am not going to back track to follow the sign marked "CIFD's path". I am going to stick with the one I am on now. I'll forever admire and covet thier position in FDNY! I only wish I could be so seasoned and great! (That is not derrogatory)FTM-PTB-RFB-EGH
