  • Excuse me officer, please go away!

Do any of you guys have problems with police officers at calls?
Like, do they always show up in groups, and/or park where ever they want?

We dont have a police force, but have state troopers around. We've had at a time 10 of them at one MVA, and was minor injuries. Also, we had a time when the ambulance was enroute to a call, with 2 other ff's in their povs behind it, and a cop passed them all (they all had their lights on) and when they showed up on scene, there he was sitting there, doing nothing of course. Our chief had a little tal with him.

I cant stand a cop who shows up, thinking ther're the chief.

Now dont get me wrong, Cops are great, they are as equally heroic, and courages as firefighters and emts, its just someitimes they get in the way, and i am sure they have porblems with the FD too at times.

What's great is when you are trying to drive a truck onto the scene of fire and there are a few dozen people standing in the road and a deputy sheriff standing there with his thumb up his @$$.

                Different Strokes

I guess this just depends on your circumstances, but here's my take...
About a month ago(on my 1st night off in ages) I was awakened at my residence by a frantic neighbor who knew I was a paramedic. She was screaming for me to "get your bag and go out to the road behind our street" as there was a horrible accident that had just happened. As I ran upon the scene, there was only a county sheriff, in uniform, who happened to be passing by just immediately after this occurred. I identified myself as a medic and the officer looked relieved but then replied that he too was a paramedic when he wasn't working "S.O." With three critically injured pts, I was never happier to have the police on scene. Like firefighters, I find that many cops also have at least an EMT-B level of training. Use em' if you need em', I've never had an officer tell me "no".

To add some to Medic162's post...
The paid FD I work for has been approached by the County Sheriffs office to certify all of thier deputies to the EMT-Basic level. We are going to do that this summer.
Most of the State Troopers here in Utah are certified to the EMT-B level and some in the outter areas are certified to the EMT-Intermediate level. A good number of Troops carry AED's and O2 in thier cruisers.

                    nobody knows

not many people know cops carry 02 and AED's. in illinois the troopers arent required to do any medical treatment even if there trained to do it because it is such a liability for the pd. our guidence counsler (first aid, CPR instructor at school) told us that if a cop is on a accident scene he more than likely can help but wont unless you ask him.

No. This place is starting to remind me of a day care center.

Don't bash them, LEOs can become your friends, or your worst enemy. Keep them happy, and generally they'll help you when you need crowd control, or something else. I am going to school to be a state trooper, and here in NC troopers go through a minimum of first responder, and I think higher. Some troopers are also starting carrying AEDs in their cars, and I know of at one moto officer that had a AED. In NC, as soon as a LEO arrives on scene, the scene is then under control of the LEO, but they'll work with you.
