  • Apparatus mascots

Our department uses the mascot from the local university. Unfortunately they put it on every damn thing we have! It would be fitting to put him on the engine that is housed on the campus, not on everything that we own.

What does your equipment have? Please relate the story behind it too.

These opinions are mine alone and do not neccessarily reflect those of my department.

Our Engine has a picture of The god Neptune which is based on the character from the Little Mermaid. He has a mean look on his face, has a leather helmet on and has a 1 and 3/4 TFT. We have under him King Neptune. Why? Because we are the Neptune Fire Company or Richland PA.

We have a stuffed dalmation that rides the tanker. We also have an Indian head that made it on the new pumper, it's been part of a logo for some time. I'd like to see a Q become the mascot of every Fire Dept.

This is our company logo(mascot). This patch is the official patch of Truck Company 2. It was approved in 1997 by then Chief of Department William J. Kosakowski. The figurehead pictured is the terminator. He is holding the Jaws of Life in his right hand and a roof saw in his left. He is surrounded by a wall of flame which signifies that whenever the members of Truck Company 2 go to work or are given an assignment, it gets done, no matter what. The date at the bottom denotes when the City of Bayonne Fire Department established it's paid department and Truck Company 2 was officially established.

The Engine out of station one has a firefighter packed up and ready to go using an attack line on a fire breathing dragon. It was etched on the jumpseat window. We also named the truck Eternal Vigillance

We're right across the street from the University of Maryland whose mascot is a Terrapin. Naturally our Truck company has been dubbed the "Terrapin Truckin' Company."

YFD's Engine 7 is right across the street from Youngstown State University whose mascot is the Penguins. They have penguins on their work T-shirts and I have nicknamed them "The Pride of the Penguins", though, that is only my nickname for them.

We have been a Mack company since the 1950's, over time we have developed a picture with a bulldog breathing fire and a dog tag with 88 on it, our number. This is painted on the front two corners as the front rounds to the sides, on all of our apparatus.

Our mascot is a Bee. Our trucks are chrome yellow (have been since the early 50's)and the bee was adopted at the suggestion of one or our charter members, I guess it seemed to go with the color (Honey Bee?). Each truck has a different bee: Pumper bee holding a hose, Rescue holding Jaws, etc. Several companies in Niagara County also have mascots of various types (Road Runner, Indian Chief, Swamp Rat, etc).

We are the only department in the county that operates white apparatus. So, when we got our newest engine, we nicknamed it "Casper" as in 'Casper the friendly ghost' (actually, I think we were circumvent rumors of it being called the white elephant). When we replaced the aeriel, we nicknamed it after another ghost from the Casper cartoons, "Stretch". We are about to put a tanker into service, and it is a toss-up as to whether it will be called "Fatty" or "Stinky" after the other two ghosts from the cartoon.

At the department I was on before, we "rescued" a Garfield stuffed animal from a practice burn and I stuck it on the dash of the engine. The last time I visited there, the smokey stuffed animal was still there where I put him.

E_man I agree with you I think the mascot on all of the apparatus looks kinda stupid. I think they could have come up with something more creative.

We use "Taz" decked out in boots, bunker pants with suspenders, and helmet. In his right hand is EMT box, left hand is Axe. Flames all around. "Whose the puppy now?" adorns the back of our 6,000 gallon tanker, no one really seems to know from where or why, but it fits. All of our other apparatus will have varying themes of Taz.

Like TCfire said Niagara County is full of companies with mascots. Ours is the Swamp Monster. It relates to a period about 6-7 years ago when our company would inevitably be called our for at least one large swamp fire a year. Smoke would be visible across much of the county. It would take days to finally get it under control. May war stories have been told about those times.
Recently we havent had any swamp fires but the name still sticks. Lewiston Fire Co. No. 2 "Home of the Swamp Monster".

I can honestly say that I'm the mascot for my Mom's department-"The Safety Pins Are For Safety!!"-pretty hoaky, I know.Though one time in art class I did a great drawing of a firefighter turning the hose on a flame-colored horse-dragon type animal.I know it sounds bizaree, but I live in THE town where the hippies come to die and therefore get some wierd assignments at school.
