  • MSA MMR pass device problems

I was wondering if anyone else has ran into the problem of the 1st generation of mmr pass devices starting to give alot of "false alarms" due to age. i'm talking about the ones where the sensor is in the harness down near the cylinder connection. we have began to get alot of false alarms and it is getting harder to shut them up by moving around once they go in the 1st warning sign. if you did have this problem did you contact msa or your sales rep and what did they do for you. basicly they are telling us our packs are obsolete even though they were just bought in 1998. i know technology advances but i would think they would stand behind their product a little longer than 3-4 years.
what are your thoughts or sugesstions.
    thank you

I had the same problem some of our packs. They don't reset after shaking them or they go into the 1st stage alarm very quickly. I had to send one back to our msa shop and they had to replace the whole unit inside the harness, at a cost of 300.00 to 500.00 dollars. It's amazing a pack 3 years old being obsolite.

MSA has issued a Product User Advisory (PUA) for their ICM 2000Plus integrated pass device. The PUA goes into detail describing the problems found and the modifications they are making. It can be found on their site at www.msanet.com

Also, please visit the Norfolk (Va) Fire-Rescue site for an article outlining our experiences with these devices since 1998. We started with the Dragonfly with remote redundant guage and switched to the ICM 2000Plus in November 2000. Since the switch, we have had over 62% failure rate of these ICMs. This prompted our agency to begin work on a user notification by MSA. MSA has been working to fix the problems and I think their redesigned unit will work well.

Our Dept. just bought them and had training with a MSA rep. that told us there is a lifetime warranty on the pack. They also have a recall out on the problem and a few others. So the packs we have are going back before they even get put into service

Mulldog, might want to get that "lifetime warranty" in writing. Haven't heard of that type of warranty coming from MSA before. I hope it is true and you got it - good for you!
