K9 SAR

I recently purchased a German Shephard puppy that's now 10 weeks old. I am looking for info on any training programs for Urban Sar for Dog and Handlers.
One of the local Police K9 officers said she would help with some of the traing, but as always wanted any and all info.

Hi Dean! Good luck with your pup! I got my fuzzy certified for narcotics detection. The best advice I can give is to wait until he is about a year old, and then have his hips and elbows screened to make sure they are sound. 1, he needs time to be a pup and 2, if he has any structural problems, training can aggrivate those. Dysplasia will rear it's ugly head around 1 year (if he has any).

Good luck with the pup. My new one is now 5 1/2 months old. I've never had a puppy before. It's deffinetly an adventure.

Contact your state police for groups in your area. They usually have a list of people the can contact in case they are needed, so they should be able to help you.
