Leather Helmet/Shield Help

Okay Gents... Don't make fun of the FNG! I have just purchased a brand new N5A and ordered a shield (NYStyle) from Paul Conway. After speaking with the customer service lady, I've learned that they do not "tap" the shield for helmet mounting. Is there a "right" way to do this. I don't want to ask the wife for another $55 because I screwed the process up. Anyway, as I'm the only "leatherhead" around these parts, I wanted to learn about any traditional ways to mount the shield that I may not be aware of. Thanks very much... Brian

You can visit www.thefirestore.com and get you a new shield for only $32.00 then you can tell the wife "but dear, I saved $23.00"

Or just do what I did. Put the screws in the screwholes on the mount, line the shield up like you like and then push real hard against the screws, this'll mark the back of the shield so you can see where to drill.

Mongo, as usual, has it exactly right!! Firestore.com is much cheaper, but the quality is the same as or better than Conway.

And the frontspiece marking by "pushing real hard"? Is there any other way to do it?

Congrats, by the way, Medic, for your purchase of the N5A. I think you'll really like it...after you rip out the suspension.

This post came just a little too late for me, but I was lucky. I got a new shield from the firestore, for my Conway, and thats more or less what I did. The only exception is after pressing real hard I used a tap to kinda make me a pilot hole, then I drilled. I figured I would have probably screwed it up but it came out pretty good if I do say so myself.

Contact Conway and tell them what helmet you have. They will tap it for you.

You can also put a little white out (or similar substance) on the end of the screws. This saves the trouble of having to push so hard, and the white out should scrape right off after it dries.

I have been considering buying a Paul Conway American Heritage leather helmet. All the posts I read concerning these helmets seems to be positive. I wanted to check on the weight of the helmet of course and was somewhat suprised when the dealer told me it weighed 72.5 ounces. This is one of the heaviest helmets I have heard of, and I am not sure if i am ready to commit to such a heavy piece of headgear. My current helmet is 58 ounces. I would like to hear any opinions on the Paul Conway from those who wear them or have worn them in the past.

The Conway is a bit heavy but with the way it fits and the balance it really isn't noticeable. I love mine and wouldn't trade it for the world, unless it was for another one.

i've been wearing my conway for about a year now and really i like it, it is heavy, but it's barely noticable once you get used to it. It's very well balanced and feels pretty good on your head altogether
