  • engine and squads in NYC

Please excuse my ignorance but I am just curious as to the difference between a squad and an engine in the FDNY. Do they do seperate jobs, etc. thanks for the info.

If I'm not mistaken, a Squad Company in the FDNY is cross trained that they can operate as both and Engine and a Truck company, but they also carry some specialized Rescue equipment, such as Hurst tools and Haz-Mat equipment, I'm sure one of the FDNY brothers can explain it much better than I, but I figured this was a start.

Pretty much correct, think of the Squds as Minot league ball players, trying to get into the big leagues, the Rescue Company. Although that is not the case for all members, as a Squaddie, is pretty much all a Rescue guy is PLUS an engine. So it depends on who you ask.....What's tougher, a Rescue or a Squad?

          51Truck_K,

Here's a little fuel for the fire....Everyone knows "TRUCKIES" are the TOUGHEST !!!!

Seriously...everyone has a job to do and all do their jobs great.

Happy (and SAFE) Thanksgiving to all.

          Warmest regards,

This website has alot of info on both the Squad and Rescue Companies. It also has a "tour" of Squad 288 that shows all the gear they carry.

              Very enlightening!

But I have a question...Pardon my ignorance, but in the Officer's Side Rear Compartment, there are 3 tires about the size of a small trailer tire - what are they used for?
I'm just curious, because, although I have had Rescue Technician training, I have never been in a company that does rescue work and I've never seen tires like that on a squad before.

Since it looks like a Griphoist or come along next to them, I'd guess they are cable slings. Motorcycle tires are nice for storing them... Just a guess

As Halligan says, it is a griphoist. I know that Rescue Co. 3 uses tires to hold their griphoist cables, so there is no reason to think that Squad Co. 288 is any different.
