There are 10 volunteer companies in NYC. 2 are officially recognized by the city and FDNY (referred to as VFDNY) the other 8 are holdovers from the days when volunteers served most of NYC and/or located in fringe areas with no nearby FDNY firehouse.
Broad Channel VFD & Ambulance, Broad Channel, Queens
Point Breeze VFD, Breezy Point, Queens
Rockaway Point VFD, Breezy Point, Queens
Roxbury VFD, Roxbury/Rockaway Park, Queens
Gerritsen Beach VFD, Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn
Aviation Volunteer Hose Co #3, Clasons Point/Soundview, Bronx
Edgewater Park Volunteer Hose Co #1, Edgewater Park/Throgs Neck, Bronx
Richmond Engine Company, Richmondtown, Staten Island (VFDNY Company)
Oceanic Hook & Ladder Company, Travis, Staten Island (VFDNY Company)
NYC also has a few dozen volunteer ambulance squads in all 5 boroughs as well..."They don't call us Tunnel Rats for nothing" MTA=More Trouble Ahead

Another point of information, all 5 queens companies were operating at the crash site today, in fact three of them (Point Breeze, Rockaway Point, and Roxbury) are closer to the site than the FDNY (Roxbury's firehouse is about 10 blocks from there)"They don't call us Tunnel Rats for nothing" MTA=More Trouble Ahead

I work in NYC during the week. Do any of these companies have associate memberships, where I could ride once or twice a month or so?
Thanks!

While at my uncles home in Breezy Point I've actually witnessed Rockaway Point work with FDNY and Point Breeze work with FDNY. They seem to act like any other mutual aid company. It's funny how a department as large as FDNY can get along with Vols. and other cities would let a couple blcoks burn down before they would ever request assistance from a Volunteer company.
