  • The Bravest of the gay?

Was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on The Bravest 11/10/01 profiling San Fransisco FD in the Gay Pride parade. First off, I think it's great that the SFFD is in the public eye promoting themselves at parades etc. No better way for public education, but, the last few scenes showed gay ff's holding hands walking down the street in the parade. I'm not 100% sure it was two ff's or police officers or a combination of the two, but they were in uniform. This I do not agree with. If you are gay...fine. I do not need to know and don't want to know. This is my opinion. I don't think that your beliefs should be pushed on me and I won't push mine on you.

Can you imagine male and female firefighters walking down the street in a parade, holding hands, making kissy-poo, and generally engaging in what we used to call in the military "PDAs"?

Of course not. And with good reason. So why do I have to be treated to the sight of two male firemen holding hands walking in a parade? If it's inappropriate in one case, it has to be inappropriate in the other. You will, of course, get all the apologists talking about how gays have been "oppressed" (could have fooled me - seems we bend over backward to avoid offending anyone's tender sensibilities). But wrong is simply wrong, gay or straight.

Don't shove it in my face, and I won't parade my heterosexuality belligerently in yours.

Sorry guys, couldn't disagree with you more. And just for the record I am 100% hetrosexual.

As with anything else, pornographic channels, books etc. If something like that is offensive to you, don't look, simple as that. To be perfectly honest, I get just as disgusted seing a male/female couple sucking face in public. Not that it's wrong, I just feel there is a time and place for it. Two Firefighters in uniform holding hands? I don't see anything wrong with that at all.

I'm gonna be following this thread closely....it's either gonna get real interesting, or real ugly... I predict Webteam intervention within 1 week.......

My dream — and I hope you don't find this too crazy — is that I would like the people of this community to feel that if, God forbid, there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do. You can't have people, if their houses are burning down, saying, 'Whatever you do, don't call the fire department!' That would be bad."

Ladycapn, our dead wrong on this one, you bet I don't have to look at porno channels and books but when these freaks of nature publicly flaunt their sick life styles, then I got every right to get so called homophobic. Keep your freaking lifestyle to yourself nobody needs to know what kind of sick person you are.
These are my opinions and my opinions only and you can be damn staight my fellow FFs on my dept. back me on this one!

Dwayne- I'll give 5 to 1 odds on 5 days...

Lady Capn is right- they're gay- so what...Big freakin deal...If they can lay a line or kick a door and get the job done, who cares....

For once, tho, Bucks may have it...We don't allow PDA's at all, in any combonation...Not appropriate in full uniform...

LT13- would your reaction be the same if the two homosexuals in question were attrative women? Just food for thought- no offense meant to anyone....

I can see both sides of the argument, but I agree with most. If your gay, ok, that's your choice. I don't need to see it, and It gives a bad public view of the FD if you are flaunting it during a parade. What does being gay have to do with the fire department? Nothing what so ever. If you are gay and want to walk in a parade..great, that's your perogative, however advertising that you work for the fire department is inappropriate. They have nothing to do with each other and should not be related in anyway. Especially when in uniform.

Heh, I'm surprised a topic re. this episode took so long to appear The SFFD particpates in every major SF parade, and the fact that the dept. has allowed members to participate during Gay Pride in uniform and on dept. apparatus seems to indicate that dept. isn't overly concerned over the whole thing--even the Chief was there! I'm sure some folks in the dept. have a problem with an "official" presence at the parade and/or gays in general, but the same could be said of many controversial issues.

I must say I have to agree with Bucks 100%!!!

I do not like public displays of affection, no matter if it is hetero or homo. Save the suck face stuff for the bedroom. Don't make everyone else have to look at it!!!

Bucks, couldn't have said it any better myself, so I will save myself the trouble of trying....

I figured this topic would stir the pot. Like I said, if you're gay...fine. I just don't want to or have to see it. But the thing that bothers me is the fact that this program ( the Bravest ) is like watching Cops. It was a long time coming for ff's. I personally love the show. That's why I watch it. Not to see homosexual activity. Another point....what about children seeing this. Since 9/11 ff's are very much in the spotlight. Our "heros". No, just the common person doing his or her job. Kids think in groupings. Such as, all ff's are heros, or all ff's work in one fire dept. They don't understand some things. I don't want to be classed as all ff's are gay.

Dwayne, if it gets ugly it won't be from me, but I have to admit I"m sitting here shaking my head in disbelief. Children classifying all firefighters as gay because they see two of them holding hands in a parade????
I'll let that comment stand on it's own, I think it speak volumes on where it's coming from.

I'm only posting because I admire LadyCapn for sticking her neck out.

I will say that if these two firefighters were only holding hands, then what's the big deal? It's not as if they were, in the words of others, "sucking face."

There were probably gay firefighters, ems and law enforcement who died on Sept. 11, including a rugby player who helped avert what could have been a major disaster on the third plane that was hijacked.

You can feel uncomfortable about their sexuality, but give someone the right to be who they are without fear.

                              be safe,
