Has anyone had to deal with an anthrax threat or hoax recently, and how did your department handle it?
    Thanks, Nathan

We had two yesterday. Both were at post offices about 3-4 miles apart. They were unloading Oprah magazines and white powder started coming out from them. We (EMS)and Tyler(TX)Fire(not the dept. I vollie for) set up a decon and stripped them down, deconed with water and bleach mix, and then rinsed them off.

They were then put in hospital gowns and transported to the hospital. We used painters plastic drop cloths and duct tape to cover the inside of the patient compartment from top to bottom.

At the hospital they were swabbed for inhalation anthrax and the samples were done at our hospital, and swabs were also sent to University of Texas Hospital in tyler and an independent lab in Dallas. All were discharged with antibiotics. We transported 9 workers.

All of the bagged clothing was turned over to the postal inspectors as well as the bagged magazines. If this turns out to be what we think it is, a talcum type powder used to keep magazines from sticking to one and other during transit, then they will get their clothes back and the public will get their mail.

Since no one was injured we used one ambulance as a shuttle and did not tie up any more units.

Oh, and during all of this we were also handling a bomb threat at a local school.

    Pretty interesting day.
