  • It Was Me - Poem to FDNY -

I sat down last night and thought of all I've heard, its not much, but its from me

    “It Was Me”

    It was me
That kissed you Good Bye this morning
As I headed off to work
    It was me
    That waved to you, neighbor,
As I headed down the street
You stood there as always saying
“I wish I had your job
only working two days a week”
    It was me
That waved to the kids at the school
    Playing without a care
Waiting for the bell to ring
    Enjoying the early morning air
    It was me
    That loved coming to work
A perfect job, with great partners
Always friends, we needed each other
    It was me
That you saw jump on the engine
    The lights on, sirens screaming
    Heading for another job
    But today was different
    It was me
That was rushing in the door
    While you were coming out
    Telling me “Good Luck”
    Climbing the stairs
    While others came down
    “Down is Good”
    It was me
    That stopped on 31
Only 40 or 50 floors to go
We need to help them up there
    Must go for the top
    It was me
    That yelled “MayDay”
    Into the radio
    The buildings’ coming down
Only one thought “God help us all”
    It was me
No it was many that were lost
    On this fateful day
Doing what we loved to do
    Fighting fires, Saving lives
    Today will change for many
    Families, Friends, & Strangers
But do not mourn, do not cry,
Look up into the cool night sky
    That shooting star
    A flickering light
    It was me

wow, very moving, very real, very true.

    remember the brothers!
    be safe!!!!!
May God bless all the people and families who have lost
their lives on 9-11-01, to those also lost on Flight 587, and to the rescuers who responded to both.

                            Mark,

Until I read your poem I had not cried over
this horrible tragedy. I feel better now but
I can still barely see what I am typing. I
would like your permission to reprint your
poem in the Jamestown Post-Journal, of course, with your credit.
