  • Question for VFD's

Would post this under the Volunteer's forums but seeing how that is not around right now...

Have any of the volunteer fire department's seen an increase in the people wanting to become members because of what happened on 9-11?

This is something I've been wondering. Personally, my FD has not seen an increase in people interested in joining the FD.

Now, if anyone has a problem with me posting this...too bad, keep your mouth shut and don't litter this forum with your socialist attitude.

No increase in membership yet. The people in town seem to appreciate us more. It's a little hard to get used to but nice. Everyone waves.

Nope none yet.Actually kind of surprised but you never know maybe this has actually scared prospets away?
Not being mean but how many people just curious about the fire service said after all that has happened"No way am I doing that!"Not to put any of them down mind you just stating that those just a little curious have looked at this and thought nope not for me.
I hope to see some more people come forward and help we really need it.But who knows.

Up at this end of the world we have not had any new members since the week prior to 11 Sep, however, I have noticed that we are getting a lot more respect and encouragement from the public. I will likely have more to say about this after this next weekend: we are having an open house at the Fire hall, to show off our new truck, combined with Fire Prevention Week activies. More to follow in a few days.

Cheers from Malahat, play safe y'all.

Same here. No new inquiries into joining the department, but much more recognition from the public.

So far no one yet. I too have seen more support for the emergency services in our area. Hopefully we see some new interest at our annual fire prevention week open house. I will let you know how things turn out.

No increase in interest...but like most of you have already stated....the waves we get enroute to a call have increased. We've even had people come up to us while out getting food or fuel stopping to say how much they appreciate what we do....and one lady made a special trip to the firehouse to tell us how grateful she was for us.

                  Adze,
Like the others, my department has not experienced an increase in applications. We were however picking up quite a few before 9/11/01.
At our Monday night meeting this week, several of our new rookies expressed concern over the events. Some of our "senior" guys spoke with them and I think they'll be okay.
Finally more and more people are stopping by the firehouse to say "thanks" or to express condolences.

No new members here, but a surprising amount of cards, donations and well wishes from all the towns people. We have forwarded all of the donations to the various fdny funds. We noticed the same thing during the Worster (spelling) tragedy. Being only 2 hrs away it got alot of press and the people began to notice us more.

Had roughly the usual amount of people to kick off my company's recruit class last Sunday. Then we had a tornado that killed 2 daughters of a nearby fire chief, and a mutual aid firefighter drop dead after returning to quarters from the same incident. It'll be interesting to see how many recruits drop off this time around.

They might not come to you but you can go to them. This is a good time to have a recruiting drive. And you don't even have to mention 9-11 because it is right at the front of everyone's mind.

I agree with Tilleman-6 on going out and recruiting. I know for a while I didn't know about local volunteer departments until I went out and found out about them. If you need more volunteers make sure people know who and where your department is, because part of the problem could be that they don't know who you are...just a thought.

No noticable interest to join the ranks but a lot of Americans living in and around our city have come up to us and expressed their deepest appreciation for what we have done in the way of memorial services that have been held and for the monetary aid that has been sent to New York through the Red Cross.
