As someone who is not (yet) truely a part of the fire service, I'd like to offer some words from outside. You guys have a different perspective: It's what you love. It's your job. For the rest of us, it looks a little different.
It is in times of tragedy that firefighters' efforts help us rise above the debris. Stories of heroism have put a lump in this nation's throat, but we are walking wounded. The actions of the FDNY (and indeed NYPD, NY Port Authority, Emergencry Medical Services, and other individuals) brought us through perhaps the most tragic day in American history. A bloodied nation thanks you. You are our solice, our hope, our brave front in the face of horror. Our thoughts and prayers are with your brothers and sisters of the FDNY. God Bless...
