Who knows maybe the Sharks are trying to tell us something. Like if you come into my waters your fair game and I might just come after you for no other reason than the fact that your in the water. It's hard to say but, I'm sure at some point and time some Scientist somewhere will figure it out and tell everyone why they are doing this. Until then your guess is as good as mine. You never know someone here might figure it out and tell the rest of the world why this is happening.

I never said I didn't care if you were male or female. So what's your point? Oh, and calm down, there's no need to swear.

I thought you were moving on?

Well HC, you specifically called out male PA FF's, so evidently you do care. Go ahead move on, no one's stopping you. I moved on a long time ago. I was just making fun of your irrational decision, that's all.

PA I could care less if you are a he a she or a heshe. Don't matter to me a bit. And if anyone took me saying that I choose not to swim in the ocean as a hysterical cry then they need to have their head examined. It is a choice I make on my own and I don't tell anyone else they can't go into the water..I just don't like to go into the ocean. Big deal! So can we move on already?

SORRY EVERYBODY DID'NT MEAN TO CAUSE SUCH TROUBLE!
I AGREE THAT THERE ARE NO MORE ATTACKS NOW THAN ANY OTHER TIME I CAN REMEMBER.I'VE ONLY LIVED HERE 10 YEARS,BUT I'VE BEEN COMING ALL MY LIFE.I GREW UP 'BOUT 60 MILES FROM HERE.
WITH SEEMINGLY MORE VICSIOS(sp)ATTACKS AND DEATHS THE MEDIA HAS JUMPED ON IT.IF A BIGGER STORY HAPPENS TOMMOROW YOU'LL NEVER HEAR OF A SHARK ATTACK AGAIN.IF,SAY,SOMEONE LIKE THE PRESIDENT GOT CAUGHT WITH AN INTERN,OR A RETIRED FOOTBALL PLAYER KILLS HIS WIFE AND HER BOYFRIEND,THE POOR OL' SHARKS COULD GO ON RIPPING AND TEARING AND WE WOULD NEVER HEAR ABOUT IT.
YESTERDAY I TOLD MICHEAL BULLARD OF PEOPLE MAG THAT I WOULD RATHER GO SWIMMING IN THE OCEAN HERE THAN GO IN THE PARKING LOT WITH A CURTIAN ROD IN MY HAND DURING A NEARBY THUNDERSTORM!!!!! AND I MEANT IT!!!
THE PRESS IS ALL OVER IT.I'VE GIVEN 12 T.V. INTERVIEWS,FOUR NEWSPAPERS,AND YES A TELEPHONE INTERVIEW WITH PEOPLE MAG.
I JUST HOPE THAT THEY ALL REPEAT MY SENTIMENT THAT LT BOB HELLE AND LT KEN RANDELL OF THE HATTERAS ISLAND RESCUE SQUAD MADE CRUCIAL DESCISIONS THAT SAVED THAT GIRLS LIFE.OTHERS INCLUDING DR.BLAIR AND DARE MED FLIGHT ALSO PLAYED CRITICAL PARTS.
THIS SCENE CLEANED UP BETTER AND FASTER THAN ANY I'VE SEEN,BAR NONE!

OH MY GOD...RUN FOR YOUR LIVES...SAVE YOURSELF!!! REPORTS OF GUN TOTTING TURKEYS IS ON THE RISE!!!!!

A Potosi, Mo., man who was showing off a turkey he thought he'd killed was shot in the leg when the wounded bird thrashed about in his car trunk and triggered a loaded shotgun.

"Apparently, the turkeys are fighting back," said county Sheriff Ron Skiles.

To make matters worse, it turned out that Larry Lands, around 40, and his son, Larry Jr., 16, were hunting a week before the start of the Missouri turkey season and will be fined, the sheriff said.

According to the Associated Press, the accident occurred after Lands shot the turkey and put it in his car with the loaded shotgun. They drove to a neighbor's house to show off the bird.

As the son pulled the turkey from the trunk it began struggling and one of its claws touched the trigger, the sheriff said. The shot went through the side panel of the car and into the elder Lands' leg.

Lands was in satisfactory condition in a local hospital.

Potosi is 50 miles southwest of St. Louis.

THE TURKEYS ARE TRYING TO TELL US SOMETHING!! I THINK THEY'RE TRYING TO TELL US TO WATCH OUR BACKS THIS THANKSGIVING! GOBBLE, GOBBLE!!!

Well HCTrouble, you don't seem to understand logical, non exaggerated points, so I chose to use an exaggerated point in order to prove a point. It all works.

I never called you psycho, you're just making people think that you are. I didn't make you out to be a hysterical nut, you did that just fine on your own.

Oh, and who ever said that I was male?

Yea and people will think male fire fighters from PA are name calling morons that have to resort to using elementary school tactics to get a point across. Psycho huh? That's OK I have been called much worse by much better people. What I am saying (and you seem to keep missing the point) is that fatal attacks are on the rise again and that I choose not to go in the water...my choice. I never said DON"T GO IN THERE YOU WILL DIE...AAAAAHHH! So stop trying to make me out to be some hysteria driven nut...that is so not the case.

My dad did nothing to provoke the attack...it was in Hawaii, where he lives, and he felt something tug his flipper, he didn't move because he was unsure of what it was, and after a few seconds he felt the tug let go and he turned to see the back end of a shark leaving the scene. From what I have read (again others may have read different info so don't start yelling at me again) many attacks are considered unprovoked to us but to the sharks you are in their water and therefore fair game. I suppose I can understand this. I am also glad he was OK.

To reiterate what gah said, let's say that on any given day, there are, I don't know, let's say 1 Million people in the ocean all over the world. HOLY COW!!! ON MONDAY TWO OF THEM WERE BITTEN BY SHARKS!!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GET OUT OF THE WATER WHEREVER YOU ARE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD!!!

It's like every single person in the world playing the lottery on the same day and all of them expecting to win.

Now, I don't have any links to any websites to back this up, but I'm guessing that all of the following are more likely to happen to you on any given day than getting attacked by a shark at the beach.

    Dying in a car accident
    Dying in a fire
Dying in a car accident w/ fire
Getting hit by a car and dying
    Getting attacked by a dog
    Get my point?

I'm still walking down the street, and even crossing it, even against these incredible odds. HCTrouble, you're giving female FF's a bad name ... soon people will think that all of them are psycho.

I'm not arguing for Susan, I'm arguing against what you try to portray as fact. You're citing statistics and then putting your own spin on them. You continue to say that attacks are up, but the scientist who collects the data you cited say they are not. It all depends on what you're looking at...and as scientifically significant goes...the statistics don't support what you are saying.

...and if I look at nothing except what you posted

5 people were attacked by sharks in NC, 34 in FL - one of which was fatal, 2 in Hawaii, 3 in CA, 1 in SC, and 2 in TX.

...this adds up to a whopping total of 47 people. Have you ever been to the beach? Do you realize how many people are on US beaches every day? ...and if you do realize this, use some of that common sense you were referring to earlier. What is it that the sharks are trying to tell us exactly? That out of the hundreds of thousands of people in the water every year only about 54 a year are worth eating or trying to eat.

Come on in, Trouble, the water is fine!

    Anyone familiar with the quote

    "Perception is reality"??

If people think attacks are up, they are. It's unfortunate that the media can determine reality, but they do.

(and I'm not even gonna get into the "when the millenium began" issue....LOL)

I never said she was right or I was right, or that either of us were wrong. Simply that she seemed to have a whole lot of facts with very little to back it up..for all I know those are just her opinions. Defend her all you want it does not change the fact that she had no actual sourced facts to present.

And I also never said that you WOULD definitely get attacked if you went in the water, just that I don't go in cause I don't want to chance it. That is my choice. But with the upswing of attacks lately I feel it is wise to avoid the water until the scientists get more info on what is going on.

So in the future let her fight her own damn battles, I have tangled with Susan before and she is quite capable of making an intelligent argument on her own.

Would you stop whining. I don't think any of us are shark experts. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not. However, if you want to come on here and tell people to "research the facts," then next time you better figure out what they are.

I agree that we can go from site to site finding contradicting information. ...so present what you found, but don't try to pass it off like Susan is wrong and you're right.

So, if you gotta have a link, here it is: http://www.dallasnews.com/national/4..._05nat.AR.html

One of the scientist quouted in this article is a lead researcher from the musuem you quoted...

The odds of getting attacked by a shark are remote. Lets think about how many fatalities and/or attacks there have been this year...now think of how many people are in the ocean on the beaches every day....day after day after day after day. Should we close the beaches? You say people aren't taking it seriously. What do you want us to do? I stand a better chance of sustaining an injury from beating myself over the head after listening to the knee-jerk reactions of some of the posts in here.
