  • Millions for MDA

My hat is off to all those who aided in raising the record setting amount for MDA this year.
Our department conducts the annual "Fill the Boot" drive and generally raises about $5000 over the course of two days. But what I would like to know is, what does your department do to assist in this worthwhile cause? I would like to see us do more than just the 2 days once a year.
I have ideas for maybe a softball tournament, large cook-outs, that kind of stuff.

    What are your suggestions?? Thanks!!

The Members of the Marlborough Firefighters Local 1714 run a voluntary toll road at two of the intersections in the downtown Marlborough area. We raised $11,390 from the toll road 2001. We also have a golf tournament for MDA in late September, which averages about $10,000 raised for this worthy cause.

For every firefighter who donated their off duty time to help raise money for MDA....THANK YOU!

What is a voluntary toll road?

We got rained out our first day and were only able to raise about 1300.00 the second day.

Good job IAFF members! I am proud of to be affiliated with you.
I saw some of the telethon and noticed Jerry Lewis looking not quite like himself. He seemed overweight, weak, and a little shaky. Did anyone else notice this or have you heard anything about his health?

          OCA,

Its when you set up with signs and an apparatus in an intersection, usually that's very busy and with a traffic light, (we do it near a shopping center on a weekend) and people pay a "toll" to donate to you. We use old leather bunker boots. It does work out well, I do have to say. Just have to find a place that has good visibility in both directions, and a place to position whatever apparatus you may place there with you. We put ours in the median or in a turn lane, but we only use the 4-way flashers. The emergency lights can get too distracting and can cause a hazard, in our experiences.
