  • Firefighting and Military Reserves

Hope I am posting this question in the appropriate area.

I am in the AF Reserve but am also starting the process to become a firefighter. Right now I am just testing, scheduling station visits and looking into a FF academy, etc. That being said, I wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were on how fire departments view those in the military reserve. Do they typically stay away from candidates who are in the reserve due to their military commitment (one weekend a month and two weeks a year)? Has anyone ever known or gone through an academy with someone who has been in the reserves? Not sure how they view that situation.

It's against Federal and most state laws to discriminate against those in the military service. In fact, many FD's give points for military service when they hire. It's also law that they MUST let you do your drills and training obligations. Some give paid military leave, some don't. You'd have to see how each FD handles military leave, but they all MUST grant it, paid or not.
