  • Do I actually have potential? Or am I simply to weak for this job?

Im in the 4th weak of my academy. I’m 5’8 141 pounds. My platoon of about 20 people has started doing 24ft extension ladder drills. It took me a whole day just to be able to pick up the ladder. Second day I could pick it up and walk with it but sometimes I would lose control.

second day we started throwing the ladder to the wall and again, I’m the only one who couldn’t do it. to be fair I’ve only tried throwing it once, but still, EVERYBODY else was able to except me.

all my fellow recruits tell me it just takes practice and that throwing ladders is mostly about technique. They all tell me they know I’ll get it.

Are they just being nice and PC though? As internet strangers with total animosity give me the non PC truth. Is it normal to struggle this much with 24s In the beginning or did I bite off way more than I could chew joining the fire service?

    Depends

How many weeks is the academy

So I am thinking this is a department academy and not just to get certified ??? And first??

Either way I would say keep going. Sounds like this is totally new to you, plus you have to perform.

It looks like you have been in the process for awhile, to get to where you are at.

So with that said, have you been working out the last couple years?? Strength training? Endurance?? Running??

    You passed cpat!!!!

May be a little late, but if you can find someone to work you out, could help.

Plus talk to all the instructors, normally you will find some that will work with you after school. Yes some of the operations involve technique, like ladders and advancing hose.

You are in!! You found out that was not easy!!

Get the mentality that you are going to finish!!

Just like with the academics,,, Some stuff you have to put extra time and effort in!!!

    Go you got it !!!

4 weeks in, yeah real academy for a career department. I have been working out and I’m actually in really good overall shape, my timed 1.5 mile run, pushups, and planks were among the top 3 in my class of 80 people.

But my brute power is what is lacking. I weigh only 140. I can only squat 185 for 5 reps, bench 145 for 5 reps, and deadlift 195 for 5 reps.

You’re right. Just gotta keep going. This is my situation and I gotta push

If the instructors will not help after hours,
            Which some will normally do,,,

Invest in a ladder and practice on your own or with other classmates, somewhere

This is your future,,,, put the investment into yourself

Do as they've said above and keep working at it, you will eventually find a way to get it done. Each time you don't succeed, remember that there will be other obstacles that you will excel in while others will struggle. Work with each other and prevail.

There are techniques that can be used. Tricks of the trade that help you overcome a lack of brute strength. Your instructors should help you out with this in an extra-curricular setting.
