  • Anybody using Novacool UEF??

We got 3 pails to try out, we're going to use it in a couple of our CAFS extinguishers and water cans for a start. One is a 30 gal. CAFS on a rescue, and the other a 10 gal. on a UTV. We currently have a couple of engines with class A and B tanks also. Another dept. is wanting to split a pallet with us, and we're getting low on our stock of conventional A and B foams, so now would be a good time to switch. I've seen quite a few videos, and talked to a sales rep that seems to be knowledgeable and forthright, but I'd also like to hear from anyone that's had experiences with this stuff, there isn't a lot of literature on it.

Okay, so here's my take on our training with Novacool. We played around with it using our grass truck with a foam tank, and 10 and 30 gallon CAFS extinguishers. With the 10 gallon extinguisher, it easily covered a 30x30' area of grass, and it seems that it would easily extinguish a grass fire of that size with reserve for hot spots. We used cones to mark the area, and when sprayed, the Novacool clung to the sides of the cone very well and didn't run off.
The bigger CAFS extinguisher is a Tri-Max brand, and it seemed to work well with the little straight tip that it comes with.
On an 1 1/2" line, Novacool seems to make better "foam" (although it doesn't really work like AFFF) with just a regular combination nozzle. Using a foam nozzle on the line gave about 20-25% less reach, and was less "foamy"
We didn't use it on any actual fire unfortunately, but it's easier to pour than AFFF, as it's thinner. Mixing directly with AFFF in a bucket, it did not gel after an hour, and remained thinner than straight AFFF. It seems to work well by raining it down or spraying directly on pavement to further aerate it into sort of a blanket.
I hope to see it used on some training fires for a better review.
