Volunteer FD Rescue Unit Robbed

Talk about you sorry low lifes, thursday night my vol fd was broken into, and someone stoled some of our equipment, they were very selective. got our Lifepak 500 AED, one bottle of O2,out of three. and both of our trauma kits with one having our pulse ox in it. somewhere around $7000 worth of gear .
pretty bad if they think they were just stealing from the dept, because we run on about 90 percent donations and fundraisers, so they were stealing from the whole community, pretty bad that our truck bay has been unlocked for 41 years without ever having anything stolen, but now we will be locking it, even though that wont stop a crook from getting in if they want to.sorry just blowing off steam, thanks for listening.

You didn't mention if there was any vandalism as well. If not, I say you were pretty lucky that there were only items stolen this time. We have had a minor rash of this sort of incident at some Vol. stations here in this part of the state. Also, secure your vehicles! The same "low-life" who expects you to save him will have no qualms about having looted your vehicle whilst you were out saving his family/property. It is truly sad and pathetic that they exist out there who would take from those who give so much already.....

Go ahead and blow off some steam! You won't be the first to do that here! You also should think about an alarm sysytem in the firehouse. We have one that's plain to see from windows and doors. We've never had a problem yet (knock on wood), and our hall is located between two 'questionable' neighborhoods. The cost is minimal compared to lost equiptment, and will probably help your insurance rates as well. Play Safe. Pat

we have been spoiled by a low crime rate, i bet there has only been two or three car thefts here ever. most crime here is usually some vandalisim , petty thefts, and meth labs.
huff you are also right about the biggest low lifes being the ones who would raise the most hell if it took more than two minutes to respond to their house when they needed our help, but i doesnt bother them to steal from us and the community or bother them to bad mouth us as a dept.
now we have to start all over on fundraising to replace all the missing gear. took us a few years to get to where we were anyway, so here we go again, but at least we have one of the most generous and giving communities in the country. i hate to think this, but i almost wish whoever stole the AED would shock themselves, and thats bad because i shouldnt be thinking that way.
PEI, i dont think we could ever swing an alarm , unless we could get the town to let the drug dog spend his nights in the station.
but then we would have to fight past him to get to the trucks. down boy..

From the list of things they took, none of which are really "resellable" items I would look close at any of the following groups:
1) Kids who have seen these items used on TV and need something to play with.
2) Anyone with a "hi risk" hobby, who may think they will need these items in the event of an emergency.
3) Survivalists who think the world will end tomorrow and they are our only hope, but most of the time these are the last people that would steal from others.

Too bad they can't shock themselves with the AED! An AED is an interesting item for a theif to be taking. Has anyone else heard of one of these being stolen? We have some concerns with the two AEDs we have where I work, but until now I wasn't too concerned since I didn't think an AED could bring much money on the re-sale market....

My Fire Department has also had some theft issues...luckily not of our equipment though. We recently had a building addition added, and the contractors doing the work had parked a large trailer on our property in front of the building. This is where they stored their equipment, tools, etc. Within the first two weeks they had been robbed of thousands of dollars of equipment and tools. We have never had anyone break into our building and steal our equipment, thank goodness. But we were very upset that someone stole from this contractor who had donated some of his company's time and materials to help us get this addition done. People are really sick and cruel! I wouldn't put it past anyone to steal if we left our doors unlocked...we always lock up every door to our building, and keep our bar room locked as well so that if anyone broke in they couldn't steal money, etc. along with fire equipment. Sorry to hear about your loss of equipment...hopefully the sorry bastard(s) will get caught and have to pay for this crime. Take care.

I think it's strange that they took only medical supplies, and I wonder why they didn't take the rest of the O2 bottles?

We've never had anyone break into our station, but a department farther north of us was having problems with people breaking in and siphoning the fuel out of the trucks and taking the batteries. Easy to replace, but a slight hinderance when a call comes in.

Years ago we had another fire dept.(vol) have several guy's call in a false alarm in our station #3 area and when the truck left, they went in and stole all of our helmets.

Why, we were the only other dept. in the county with the letters KFD.

I hate to be the one to say this, but I bet all of us were thinking it when we heard which items were taken, did you consider a member or someone recently turned down for membership? Not exactly your everyday items that were stolen. Also, if you have an outside company fill your O2 bottles, let them know about it, they might have someone other than a regular customer come in and try to get a bottle filled. Another possibility would be the families of your "frequent fliers," if you're at their house regularly and you just happen to bring in the same equipment each time they might see that as stuff they should have around. How about someone in need of medical attention and not needind the publicityof a hospital. Gunshot, stabbing or some other foul play that doesnt need to get the attetion of the surrounding PD's.

We just had a similar situation.We had just got 3 new icom portables,2were issued right off to cheif and dep.cheif.Number 3 has come up missing! our station hadn't ever been locked up except for the last 2 months then WHAM our first theft.It's kind of funny that nothing else was taken such as T.V. VCR etc. i suspect a person who quit after being questioned because "He don't have to take this sh*t!" It is tough cause you can't just go pin some punk up against a wall and say "HAND IT OVER OR I'LL KICK YOUR *** UP BETWEEN YOUR SHOULDER BLADES!" i think whoever it was either was a member is a member or has been around before on your unit.Just keep your ears open sooner or later someone will blab and you'll get your revenge!

Youre very lucky that they didnt do any vand. Its just sad to see that someone thats going to need your help some day could be the moron that robbed you! I havent heard of any robberys at my fd but it is a known fact to lock ur vehicles at our firehouse because it is not uncommon for a little punk to walk through and take what he likes. Good luck with ur future, and hopefully youll find the moron(s) that did this.
