  • What type of Gloves do you like

What type of gloves are your favorite. Do use use cowhide, elkskin, pigskin, ect. Also do you like the nomex wristlet or the gauntlet style. All opinions are welcome and the use will be for structure fires.

    Thanks, D308

Right now I've got cowhide with nomex wrist. I'm pretty satisfied with them. I had some pigskin gloves before, and they were ok, but one thing I really didn't like was they became pretty stiff after they got wet and dried. I've never used elkskin gloves that I can remember. I do like the nomex wrists better than the gauntlet gloves, unless you have the extended wristlets on the coat.

I use elkskin "Firefighter gloves" with knit wrists made by The Glove Corporation. They have remained soft and pliable even after repeated wetting and drying out.

I will NEVER own another pair of pig skin gloves. As stated earlier, once they get wet and dry out, they become stiff and worthless.

I am currently carrying two pair of cowhide gloves. One pair has the wristlets. I use these primarily for firefighting duties. The other pair are gauntlets which I use primarily for rescue duties and also for overhall when I need a dry pair of gloves. The gauntlets are more comfortable but obviously offer less fire protection. They are also handier to get on over latex gloves when I am working in rescue roles that may require me to change over to patient care.

We also use the 'firefighter' elkskin gloves from Glove Corporation. Very soft, even when wet and then dried. The guys with the wristlets with the thumbholes on their bunker coats like the shorter gauntlet gloves.

I use just regular cowhide gloves with no wristlet or gauntlet (extended wristlet on the coat). I like...only burnt my hand once, on the hood of a car. Only problem is they really don't work to well unless they're wet...if you know what I mean (pretty stiff when dry)

For rescue I use ringers gloves with the extended wristlets...I really like them. Feel great, and you can really get a good grip on the tools with them.

I prefer the Sleeve mate from Morning Pride. There where designed by the Houston FD. Its a great fire fighting glove. The only problem is that it cost about 125.00 for a pair. My dept doesn't buy them due to cost, so i fork out the cash to have a pair or 2. To describe the glove for you, its a regular Morning Pride short glove, they have sewn a piece of PBI material with reflective stripping around the end of the glove. The gloves goes over the end of the coat to about the mid forarm area. There is a pull strap that cinches the gloves around the coat. That allows hot water not to enter your coat sleeve while your hands are working above your head.
