  • Creative Drills

Last night we had ladder drill, but instead of the same old drill, the OIC got his creative juices flowing. The first part of the drill was "The Weakest Rung" in which we divided the room into two teams and had to answer questions on ladder terminology, SOP's and couple of questions on the movie 'Backdraft'. After, we went to a local elementary school and the same two teams had a timed competition in which we had to ladder the building using 28' extension ladders (schools gym..about 24' and get three tools(saw, axe, and pike pole)on the roof. 1st team on the roof wins.
Best two out of three. It made a ho hum drill fun for a change.
Wondering if any other depts had some creative drills to share.

We've tried a few different things to liven up our training. The first is a hose replacement timed competition. We break up in teams of 3 (Engine, Rescue, Ladder at my station, there is 200' of 1 3/4 connected on the ground. When you start you connect to the hydrant and charge the line, then you must knock down a preset cone, you then shut down the hydrant replace 50' of hose, recharge, then knockdown the last cone.

The Second drill is called first water. You must setup completely, 1 line, 200' from a engine discharge, the engineer must set up to draft out of the dump tank. There are 4 cones preset at various locations that you have to knockdown, all this is done with a team of 3 also for time. This drill is good because it combines alot of skills, drafting, hose movement and setup, teamwork, etc...

My batt. chief has also developed a jeporady style game with questions relating to extrication, which always leads to some intense rivalries.

            Hope this helps, stay safe
