  • Leather New Yorkers in service

Was wondering how many depts out there still allow thier Firefighters to use the old style Leathers, pre skull-savers. I know they are still popular in the North-east US.
( I dont mean people who are wearing them without the Dept knowing )

I'm of the opinion that the old style New Yorker (pre "skull-saver") was the best fireman's helmet ever made, I'd love to be able to wear the one that sits on the bookcase in my den. Unfortunately, OSHA thinks differently and NFPA is even worse. We have to wear the NFPA Sam Houston...or else the dept. issued "salad bowl"

I'm just happy they give us 1010's and not salad bowls. Chief would have a heart attack if we mentioned leather $$$$$

It stays on the desk at home.

I know you said not to include those who wear them without the Dept knowing, but I just wanted to include my little secret. Our dept does let you buy your own NY'er, which is great to have for bunker gear inspections..

This is how I did it, You buy yourself a good can of spray paint and some brand new reflectives, and something to cover the exposed leather up with inside of the helmet,(I use a trauma score sheet), leave the 4 way suspension exposed, and try to convince them that is the impact liner, only if they question it of course. Give it a great new paint job slap those reflectives on it, and just like that you have a sharp looking 5a helmet that can pass as a N5A, (slightly illegal helmet) that was 10 yrs ago, and I haven't been caught yet. Just like Nick said, don't ask, don't tell...SO DON'T TELL

I use a Houston with the rachet removed. Our dept pretty much lets us use anything as long as it passes inspection.
