At CO 29 you will be riding the layout position all the time, and of course you will be first on the ambulance, which is the busiest in the county after the rescue units, with about 20 BS calls a day. There are very few if any volunteers left at station 29 other than the chief. Go somewhere else if you want to do something other than EMS. Believe me, it's the absolute truth......Comment

Companies 1, 12, 33, and 27 are all strong volunteer houses. I'm at company 12. We do a good mix of calls. Most of our staffing is college students who attend the University of Maryland. We run Engine Truck Hamat Foam Unit and Ambulance.
Company 1 is very similar. They are a little bit busier and are also staffed by a lot of college students. They run Engine Truck Rescue Squad Metro Support Unit and Ambulance.
Company 33 is a very busy house that is 100% volunteer. They run a lot of work too, mixed in with the usual BS. The run a very busy Engine and a busy Tower Company.
Company 27 is also very busy. They run one of the busiest if not the busiest rescue squad in the county. If you like squad work, 27 is the place to go. They run an Engine in addition to the Rescue Squad. They are also a Hazmat Support company.Comment

Oh..im sure gonna offend some people with these comments, oh well, i do it all the time here...
If you want to catch alot of fire with competent and aggressive firemen, your only options are really Co. 8 (Seat Pleasant) or Co. 33 (Kentland) both are very busy and have special services. 8 has their Rescue Squad and 33 has their Tower Ladder. Both companies run about 150 or more working fires a year.
now to offend:
Wanna Run with college kids join 1, 12, 34
Wanna be the only vollie in the station join 5, 19, 21, 23, 26, 29, 38, 41, 43, 46, 47, 48
Call around the stations. Look at their websites. Ride at different stations.
This board is not a very good way to get objective views, everyone is partial to their own station or ex-station.
MAKE YOUR OWN DECISION!!! and good luck.Comment

I agree with MB1213635. It all depends on what type of work you like, Engine, Truck, Squad, or EMS. If you want to be one of the only volunteers go to a station that has an ambulance in it or if you want to go to a strong volunteer station go to one without an ambulance. Just remember that the ambulance always goes out before anything else. Good luck, and look at diffrent web sites, that will probably give you a good idea.Comment

I think I have to agree with Hot Damn..........if you are looking for a high call volume and lots of fire Seat Pleasant and Kentland (33 not Largo FD co 46 )are the place to go. I think I'll throw in co 27 also. Now dont get me wrong....other companies are busy but they are either single engine houses or they are all career houses ( even though the firehouse may say volunteer FD......dont believe it ) Kentland is a strong volunteer house, Seat Pleasant is not AS strong as it once was but contrary to popular belief still has a good number of volunteers, and Morningside is also a strong house. Out of those three stations......33 does not have an ambulance but they do have a mini pumper which being the new guy.......you WILL be on it running all the medic locals and BS calls, but you will also run a good amount of fire calls on the rigs........co 8 has an ambulance but u wont necessarily have to be on that all the time.......one career guy is always on it so that leaves the second spot open to whatever volunteer wants to ride it and u will still run alot of fires on the rigs.........co 27 has no ambulance either.....however from what i have heard.....they will be receiving 279 in the future and may be losing the squad to 23.....however......thats normal FD rumor mill and we'll just have to wait and see what the new Chief does starting July 1st......again tho.....u will run alot of fires there also. Those are about your best bets as far as joining a volunteer house.....again it depends what u are trying to get out of your firehouse as to where u should join.........but I do believe........u will be very unhappy at 29......i think u should check into someplace different. Also as was said earlier.....check out the different websites.....they can give u some insight. Good luck.

Berwyn Heights is about an average department as far as runs go.......not too many calls............but not the slowest in the county. They dont see alot of fire like the 33's, 8's however they do run alot of wrecks and are known for their extrication abilities with their rescue squad along with the occasional 2 alarm fire in Springhill Lake. They too have a fair amount of college students there too due to their proximity to the campus. Now, as far as Rescue Squad 13 goes....what a waste........it wont get out, it wont do the job, it wont be staffed not to mention it is the absolute most hideous THING I have ever seen....yes I have seen it.......it has arrived ladies and gentleman.....so, so ugly....just what the north side needed.......a 5th rescue squad in a 5 square mile radius...........our prayers go out to Co 14......what a waste.Comment
