  • PT testing/Dept PT

    Ok guys,

    I'm looking for information on either:

    What your department does for PT testing, or what your dept uses for annual PT. (Wellness programs)

    I think ours is lame. That is why I'm asking for input on how to improve it. Please help.

    We have a PT test for new hires.
    Bunker boots, pants, coat and helmet.
    Wearing a SCBA with no mask.
    Done for completion only in 10 minutes
    1. extend charged 1 3/4 150'
    2. walk to roof ladder carry 25' and raise against wall lower and carry back.
    3. carry 50' 2 1/2 on beams
    4. mand. 30 sec break
    5. crawl through tunnel pulling dry 2 1/2 with straight stream nozzle.
    6. pull 185 lb rescue randy back through tunnel approx 35'.
    7.walk to stairs mandatory 30 sec break.
    8. up and down stairs with 50'section of 2 1/2 three times.
    9. raise 30 lb of weight on pully hand over hand 25'
    10. mandatory 30 sec. break
    11. move beam on sled with sledge
    12. carry three items one by one 30' and back

    Yearly PT testing and "Wellness" ZERO

      This is where we are at, in the past year we've had at least 2 multiple bypass surgeries, several strokes, including a 40 y/o friend of mine who is still in a coma, and misc other service connected retirements, about 10% of our department is probably been treated for or is effected by some type of heart/lung problems. The union doesn't want to see physical training because they are afraid that mgmt will use it as a tool to get rid of ff's. Apparently the fd doesn't want to see it because of related injuries(strains,pulls,etc). However they may be coming around because of the expense of treatment. So... right now, our retirement is 30years and out(if you last that long). So you hire someone when they're 18 and wear them out for 30 years and let them die off, with minimal pension benefits, and the union doesn't want a physical fitness criteria so they are of no help. I guess we're just on our own.....

        My Dept doesn't do anything for PT or PT testing. I think everyone should adopt the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test

        Pull Ups
        Crunches
        3 mile run

        Perfect score = 300 points (100 for each event)

        20 CORRECT pull ups (elbows lock out when down)
        100 crunches in 2 minutes
        3 miles in 18 minutes.

        Minimum scores in each event = 3 Pull Ups
        50 crunches in 2 minutes
        3 miles in 28 minutes

        Minimum total score of 125 points
        Pull Ups = 5 pts
        Crunches = 1 pt ea
        Run = -1 pt for every 10 seconds over 18 minutes

            Actually, I've brought up the idea of running together a few times, and it's usually met with nervous laughter.

            I think we should do PT AT LEAST twice a month, and I think there should be some kind of fitness test (with gradations for age, like the military) at least once a year. Maybe even use that "firefighter challenge" course that we did for drill about a month ago.

            Personally, my preference would be to have PT at every drill, and possibly a "Lieutenant's PT" or "Captain's PT" once or twice a week that's voluntary.

            It's tough to push these things in a volunteer department.
