  • New York Fire Chiefs Show

Okay what is happening the NYS Chiefs show used to be fantastic. I think it has fallen like a rock now that it is in Syracuse. It is closer for me and many others. I noticed that the most of the halls are half full if that. The apparatus is mostly demos and not many of them. You still pay an outrageous price for food like the concord. I waited in line for halff an hour because they only had one printer working and I waisted $35 bucks on this years show for what, dang little. I live an hour away from Syracuse and three hours from Harrisburg, I guess next year if I am going to spend money it will only be in Harrisburg unless they change the Syracuse show dramatically. NYSAFC move the show to the Carrier Dome or Oncenter and War Memorial and cut the price by two thirds. Okay guys don't be bashfull tell me what you think.

    Hehehe...

The New England Fire Chiefs Association grabbed the brass ring when NY Chiefs went upstate...that year the show which used to be held in places like Sturbridge or Marlboro MA which are central to New England, moved an hour to the west to Springfield -- putting it closer to Long Island/Westchester County/Albany region than the NY Show.

Plus to boot, the last several years (and I believe again this year) the Vendors have paid extra in exchange for *no* admission to the show floor for the spectators.

It's a much bigger show than it used to be!

I agree with the Spotted One here. The New England Fire/Rescue Expo has been improving every year. It is being held on the grounds of the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, Massachusetts. It's easy to get to and a great show, with lots of fire apparatus and vendors galore! If you do go...bring your cash, Master Card and Visa... I don't think they take American Express...yet!

I have attended the NYS FIRE CHIEFS SHOW for many years and quite frankly you must have been in the wrong place Fyrtrks. The show is and has gotten bigger every year including since its move upstate. I won't bad mouth any other show and think that its great that there are numerous quality shows available. Whats missing since the move upstate:
        1. A large group of patorns jammed like sardines into 1 or 2 buildings.
        2. Waiting at each vendors spot to get up to the front to talk to someone (the lines 4 or 5 deep).
        3. The pushing that had to be done to get around.
        4. The raunchy sweaty smell of hundreds of firefighters packed in a steamy atmosphere.
        5. The long time to find a parking spot and the long walk from that spot.
        etc. etc.
Now the show is in a much more spacious setting (which is why you may think that the buildings are half empty). Each vendor has ample space to display their goods. There is plenty of space to walk around at a lesurly pace. There is no more pushing and shoveing to get thru. There are many food venues as opposed to very limited choices. There are numerous places to sit and take a break. And lets not forget plenty of parking. If you do your research you will find that both the number of attendees as well as the number of vendors has gone UP. But hey its a free country and you can go to any show that you wish if your not happy with New York's. I will agree with you that the price IS TO HIGH!! Also children under 12 should be FREE.

I have been the last three years to Syracuse. The Horticulture building was half empty this year two years ago you could hardly get in there were so many pieces of apparatus, the vendors on the backside were all gone. The Dairy building was 3/4 filled last year and maybe it was 1/2 to 2/3 filled this year. I admit the parking is ample and the food seliction is quite abit different from just kosher hot dogs. The hands on programs and the outside activity areas are much more inviting. I still must protest that the entrance fee is too high and there must be a reason so many vendors are absent. I think that Thursday should be dropped and Sunday added, I have heard that vendors don't like to show on Sunday. I guess they are there till 2003?

Now someone said the show has gotten bigger-YEAH RIGHT!!
I have gone to the show since 1995 and since the move to Syracuse it has gotten smaller.
I can only think of a couple of vendors that stopped going like Tempo Glove, and NYC Burn Fund. Tempo hasn't been there since the move and I didn't see the Burn Fund this year. I know that there are more Vendors that have stopped going but I can't think of any now.
Also from talking to a few people the new bar code thing on the tags showed that only 15 F.d.'s from Long Island came up. And the show has GOTTEN BIGGER?

Sorry Smokey! Been going for 20 years now. And it's getting worse. Let the wife and kids under 12 in free.
Very few people from the island and no FDNY or other major cities this year that we saw.
Price of the booth space is killing all the vendors.
If you looked around everyone down sized their booth space.
You are right about the past crowds, but this year was terrible on Saturday.

It's just as easy for most of the southern NY f.d.s to go to Baltimore, Amtrak takes about the same time as a drive to Syracuse... and the Md. show is, far and away, the better show.

Haven't been to the NY Chief's since it left the Concord!.. That was one of the best shows out there.. not to mention Janeys at night

Im not sure about now, but the display floor in Baltimore couldn't hold a candle to the display in NY.

Well, I have to agree the show did seem to have shrunk a bit. Last year was my first time and I noticed that there were fewer vendors this year. I am willing to blame some of it on the damn fuel prices. It is getting pretty expensive to drive anywhere lately. I personally think that locating the show in central NY is a good idea, this way everyone has approximately the same length trip. Besides, gotta love the Dinosaur on Thursday Night. Hopefully next year they will get more vendors and renew interest in the show.

I attended the show on Friday. I am impressed with the amount of space available for the show vs when it was at the Concord. There are a couple of things that could make it better.

                      1. Have it in a more central location in the State. (Albany?)

                      2. Where ever it is held it needs to have accomodations closer to the show.

                      3. After driving 4 hours each direction and being chased out of the show at 5 PM. It would be much better if evening hours were offered on at least two of the days of the show (such as in the days of the Concord).

                      4. The price is steep, but if I have the extra time to meet with vendors/manufacturers then I would not mind so much. I got alot of work done in 6 1/2 hours time.

Perception is an amazing thing. Only the folks inside of NYSAFC know the truth about numbers growing or shrinking. And dont expect them to tell you the truth. Do you think vendors would return if they knew others were not? No matter where the show is located, someone has to travel to get there. I dont believe the show is shrinking- I think as members in the fire service "mature" they begin to see these trade shows as what they really are all about- selling goods! An all around show has speakers AND hands-on training. NYSAFC has a long way to go to catch FIREHOUSE EXPO. FDIC is great but not close to east coast depts. i thought that the hands-on at NYSAFC was gonna take off- figures a good thing gets squashed again- Anyone out there able to comment firsthand on the NYSAFC hands-on in 2000?
Want a good show? Go to EXPO!
