Here's our favorite quote excerpted from our book: "The Heart Behind the Hero":

"I provide a faceless, nameless service to a community that rarely knows how much they need me.
If I am called from a sound sleep to sacrifice my life, attempting to save the life or property of someone I do not know ... I will do so without regret."

To The Public You're Not Just A Firefighter, You're The Fire Department

When They Say "Somebody Do Something", You're The Somebody They're Talking About.

Learn All The Jobs, At Some Point You'll Have To Do Them.

When On Scene, Always Remember, Those Aren't Victims, Patients Or Civilians, They're People.

Never Enter A Fire With Someone Who Is Braver Than Yourself.

If You Must Run Away, Do So Quietly, Screaming Looks Bad On The News.

          Bravery Cannot Exist Without Fear.

Watch Where You're Going And Remember Where You've Been.

Anyone Can Fight Fires But Only A Few Are Firefighters.

Make Up Your Mind In Advance To Lead, Follow, Or Stay Out Of The Way, Then Do It!

Hope That In The End They Mistake Your Screams Of Terror For Shouts Of Defiance

Gripe, Bitch Or Complain, But No Sniveling.

It Is All About The Sacrifice And The Weapons You Choose.

Know Where The Splatter Zone Is Before It Hits The Fan

If The Crew Isn't Following, It's Because The Leader Isn't Leading

Fire Fighters Don't Cry Or Give Up At The Scene! We Are The Ones The Public Expects To Be Strong, Held Together, And Ready For Anything. If You Can't Handle Something Walk Away From The Public To Deal With It. We Represent The Entire Dept. Not One Person.

If You See Something Wrong, Speak Up.

Just some of my quotes and favorite sayings:

"Get in; Shut Up; Hold On; GET READY!!"

                  "Damn the bad luck"

                  "Win one for the Gipper"

"I'll pick-up your line....The one at the door"

Bravery and Courage are nothing more then controlled fear.

Anyone who doesn't have fear needs to be pyschologically evaluated.

Its better to have and not need, then need and not have.

Heroes, are ordinary people who at 1 time in their life, did a extraordinary deed. I am a professional, while there is nothing in my career I do that is ordinary. There is and always will be the extraordinary. That is what separates me from the hero.

Your true education begins when the classroom ends.

Experience is what you gain when something you don't want to happen does. And death is the worst experience you want.

                    The lighter side:

Its better to do and ask for forgiveness then ask and not get to do.

If your thinking to yourself, "What the hell am I doing in here?" Its probably already too late to turn around.

And from an exert from Jim Page's book "The magic of 3am" F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote....
"In the dark night of the soul, it is always 3 o'clock in the morning." In reference to the fact that many of the best war stories always occur at 3 in the morning.

The above are my thoughts and do not reflect that of any dept/agency I work for, deal with, or am a member of.

"The hardest fire we as firefighters have to fight is the one that we can prevent from even starting."
This is how I start my fire prevention presentation at the local school every year. And every year some one still asks, "Why then do ya'll need all themm fancy trucks and all that training the rest of the year if you are preventing the fires in the first place?"
