  • DRIVER TRAINING

I was wondering if i could get some ideas of what some different companys have set as thier driver training that a person must go through before they are concidered qualified for that piece.
also if you allow people who are coming from another company to just take a refresher or if they have to go through te full training program.
    thanks

Here in Michigan you must have one of two things. If you have a CDL you may drive any apparatus in your dept. If not, you must go through an 80 hour course taught by a certified driver training instructor and then be certified by the state training council.

If you drive here without one of these two endorsements, you are not covered by the city, liability wise. In other words your on your own if you get into an accident. Each state has different laws covering driving requirements. Here we fall under P.A. 300

Company officers are not allowed to train drivers unless they carry the instructor certs. This also applies to tillermen.

Our departments driver's must have a valid CDL to operate apparatus over 26,001 lbs. Appratus under 26,000. lbs can be operated by holders of regular drivers license who are over 18 years of age and out of high school.

For a driver to quailify on an appratus they must pass a 21 mile road course( driveing on main, secondary, side, development roads, up & down grades, etc.)

An off road course (serpentine in forward and reverse, backing into bay, etc.)

A pump / equipment tests. (Operated pump, handle simulated problems, operate all appratus accessories, identify equipment on appratus and where carried.)

Drivers must them requailify on the appratus they drive every year. The yearly qualifications consist of a modified on road course, the off road course and pumping / equipment test.

It may seeem like a hard quailification process but it turns out drivers who know the appratus well.
