Gays in Fire Service?
I having nothing against gay people and never will. I feel that, that is their lifestyle and kudos to them, but would you want to work with a gay Firefighter, and do you think they should be allowed in this kind of work.

I can care less if the person next to me is a guy, gal, gay, lesbian, pink, purple, white, or black. As long as that person can do the job they were hired/volunteer for.
Kinda like asking if you would like a prisoner next to you. I'm originally from Ca and CDF uses many corectional "Employees". As long as the job gets done we need to respect the person. -
NCFiremedic- you are absolutely right on the money. It means absolutely nothing who a brother or sister firefighter chooses to love, the color of their skin and their gender make no difference, and their religion makes no difference. If they are a good firefighter, thats what counts.

As long as he ain't starin' at me when I'm in the toilet or leering at me when I flex my muscles on the job and patting me on the butt with a little squeeze, asking to take long hot showers with me after the big burner, or try to force me to accept his chosen lifestyle I have no problem with it. Just do our job, kick back and swap war stories in the day room and rock on.Comment

I can't believe this is even a topic in 2001! What f-ing difference does it make if they are gay or straight inside a burning building? The absurdity of the question lies in the replacement of the word "gay" with "Irish", "black", "female" or "six-fingered". All of these have had their abilities questioned in the fire service at some point in history, and all have shown their worth. It's the person you measure, not their skin color or who they sleep with!
I have two openly gay women on my crew. Both are pleasant to be around, pull thier weight on calls and help out at the station - more so than a number of the straight members of the department. What more could a captain ask for?
Mongofire_99 shows his true troglodyte nature with his statements about being watched while on the toilet and flexing his butt muscles on the fireground. It sounds to me like he may have some repressed "issues" he needs to deal with. Mongo, it's 2001 not 1955, try to be a bit more enlightend, eh?

I'm with the majority, I have no problem with it either. But I do have to say that there would have to be some limits. Just like I wouldn't passionately make out with my wife, or show other open signs of affection while at work, I wouldn't want to see it with anyone else. (yes even lesbians,due to crew integrity) You can tell me about your boyfriend all you want, but I dont' want to see ya makin out.

Personally, A person's sexual orientation should have no bearing on their job performance. We are there to do the job, not get into each others private and personal lives.

I find gay men to be absolutly delightful! Several of my good friends, male and female, are gay and I couldn't care less about it. I don't see any reason what so ever to exclude them from the fire service.

Wrong. It's only an issue if people keep making it one. The same with women and (insert your favorite ethnic group here) in the fire service. Only the thick-headed continue to have a problem with minorities fighting fire.
