Fit Tests

My dept. does fit tests once a year, as does
my employer, where I'm on the HazMat team. In
each instance, we have our own masks issued,
which makes a big difference. In both cases,
we fall under OSHA, so no facial hair is
allowed other than a mustache, or a goatee
that does not interfere with the seal area.
This is enforced by the dept., but has never
been an issue at work.

Also check the maker of the SCBA use guide our policy is clean shaven besides the paid depts to my north we are the only Vol dept in my county to have such a policy.

We do fit testing once a year using the PortaCount. Each person has their own mask.

As far a facial hair we follow the OSHA regs.

OSHA has an article on facial hair, I don't have the URL for it at the moment, but I might be able to get ahold of it another time. Basically it says that there sahll be *no* facial hair in contact with the seal of the SCBA mask.

Because of OSHA having published that act, if someone does have facial hair in contact with the seal, and it causes a breach and the firefighter is injured because of that.. then the insurance does not have any obligation to pay medical bills, and more often thatn not as cheap as they are they won't pay for them.

You really don't have much of a choice when it comes to facial hair, unless you intend to pay your own medical bills.

we do fit tests annualy because they are required + if you dont have it you cant ride apparatus and thats final...some of the firefighters in my town do that same. BUT..we are still in the process of getting each member their own mask..so basicaly the fit test is just a waste of time...except for those who are going to purchse a new mask for themselves or adept htat is purchasing new masks..At least this is my opinion about the tests done in my town..

Does your department do fit tests? If so what is the policy on facial hair? Guys in my department shave for the fit test then grow back their beard or mustache til next year. Who gives your department the fit test? How much good do you think they are doing?
