I've been reading a few of these posts about PPE and have a question. How many full-time paid fire departments let their emplyees purchse their own turnout's, helmets and boots? My department purchases all of our PPE due to the liability issue.
If you can pourchse your own PPE I'd like to hear about your department. ie. size, annual budget, etc.
For instance my department has about 100 FF's, 5 Engines, 3 Ladders, annual budget of about 4 Million.

    Thanks for the input.

My full time department has just approved the use of extrication gloves on pin ins. If we want to wear them we have to purchase them ourselves. Otherwise they provide all of our gear. We have about 55 full timers and cover 15 sq miles and close to 40,000 residents.

My part time department will let us subsidize the extra cost for leather fire boots, otherwise they provide everything. They have 6 full timers and about 40 paid on call / premises and cover 14 sq miles with around 25,000 residents.

Our department consists of 14 career firefighters approx 10 part-timers and about the same number of volunters. We cover a 5 sq. mile area with close to a million dollar budget.
We are provided with a $500 dollar per year uniform allowance, we are provided with a turnout coat and pants, we are responsible for helmets, hoods, gloves, flashlights and all other incidentals.
      Be safe all.
