    Hi
I am trying to get hired as a firefighter. I am also blind in one eye. How can I get hired with the current NFPA standards? I have 20/20 vision in my other eye. Can the americans with disabilities act help me? Any ideas on this would be great. Thank you mz

The ADA is there to help however paid fire depts have very strict phyical ability tests that are the same for everyone, if 1 eye is deficient chances are it will be a fight not worth trying to win. You might be best off trying to prove to the dept on your own that your vision through one eye is just as good as anyone with 2. That would involve contacting someone higher up and talking with them about it. Good luck, You might try contacting the guy who is thinkingof using the ADA in the article about the man who is deaf???

The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that the ADA did not protect two Alabama state employees. Look for that to trickle down to county and municipal employees also.
