I haven't had hearing in my right ear since I was sick due to a illness. I've also been a firefighter since 2001 and am now a line officer. My lack of hearing has not hindered me one bit, other than normal conversation I make sure I stand on my good side towards the speaker.
I have never once missed a tone, radio transmission, PASS alarm activation or evac alert. I wear a radio strap, not to look cool, but to ensure the lapel mic is on my good side.
Some peoples lack of understanding of a "deaf" firefighter, or person in general, is down right outrageous. People don't even realize I have a hearing issue until I tell them and they're shocked.
