Glasses and scba
I have seen some guys use goggles or what looked like sports glasses under there masks.
I'd like any info on them.

I too am considering getting a pair so that I can function better on calls where I am wearing an SCBA. I function fine without my glasses but, I think this would help me especially if I had to read something while wearing an SCBA.

Spectacle kits are avaibable from all the sCBA manufacturers. Just get ahold of the rep that handled your masks, they will have pricing and description.

I ordered a set of combat eye glasses from US Cavalry. I have used them several times and they are great! I took them to where I get my regular glasses from and had OSHA safety lenses put in them. They take some time to get used to when first putting on your mask but, once the straps are tight it seals very well. Check them out, it will be money well spent!

The NFPA, OSHA as well as all SCBA manufacturers clearly frown upon any sort of break in the facepiece seal. This INCLUDES the rubber strap used by the manufacturer of the "sports" type glasses. ALL SCBA manufacturers have spectacle kits available for their particular masks. Additionally, if you are in an OSHA state, your employer MUST provide you with spectacle kits AND the lenses. Volunteer Fire Departments are counted as employers, and as such, they must provide these for you. Contact the manufacturer or sales rep for your particular type of SCBA.

Can you cite for me where in the OSHA regs it states that the employers must provide this? As I already have the kit for the SCBA, but am expected to purchase the lenses myself.

The following is copied and pasted from the OSHA website for 29 CFR 1910.134
(g)(1)(ii)
If an employee wears corrective glasses or goggles or other personal protective equipment, the employer shall ensure that such equipment is worn in a manner that does not interfere with the seal of the facepiece to the face of the user.
As you can see 29 CFR 1910.134 (g) (1) (ii) puts the burden on your employer. Do not buy sports goggles as they will interfere with the seal of your mask. Contact the SCBA rep. and have your dept. buy the inserts and pay for the glasses to be inserted. Don't take NO for an answer.

There is an actual OSHA mandate somewhere that clearly states that they must purchase and maintain such equipment for those who require it. Additionally, there is also info in the same mandate that prohibits employers from discriminating against you if you wear glasses and want the employer to provide said equipment. I have to research it....get back to you....

OSHA has been wrestling with who pays for certain PPE for years. They proposed amending the PPE standard (1910.132) a couple of years ago to try to clarify it but I don't think the standard has been changed yet. Here's the proposed change:

2. A new paragraph (h) would be added to Sec. 1910.132, to read as follows:

(h) Payment for protective equipment. All protective equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE), required in this part, shall be provided by the employer at no cost to employees. Exception: The employer is not required to pay for the logging boots required by 29 CFR Sec. 1910.266(d)(1)(v). The employer is also not required to pay for safety-toe protective footwear, or for prescription safety eyewear, provided that all three of the following conditions are met:
(1) The employer permits such footwear or eyewear to be worn off the job-site;
(2) The footwear or eyewear is not used at work in a manner that renders it unsafe for use off the job-site (for example, contaminated safety-toe footwear would not be permitted to be worn off a job-site); and
(3) Such footwear or eyewear is not designed for special use on the job.

Our fire department uses the Scott 4.5 SCBA's and before that we had Draeger's SCBA's. Both Scott and Draeger make a in-the-mask corrective lens eyeglasses kit. The kit comes with the in-the-mask eyeglasses, mounting hardware, and lens shapes for making lenses with your particular prescription. Lenses can be made at LensCrafters for under $70. Our city provides the kit and reemburses us the price for the corrective lenses. Scratch resistant polycarbonate lenses may cost much more.

I found the reference to proposed changes, as he listed, but nothing saying that they had been accepted and put into effect. The Scott facepiece inserts cost about $26 (I called Scott directly), not sure how much having the lenses made would cost. I personally wear soft contacts, so I can sleep in them. (I've worn mask inserts while on military duty, and was *NOT* impressed with their performance.)
