  • NFPA Membership?

I received a letter from the NFPA a while back asking me to accept a membership. The letter outlined a bunch of different areas that I could receive information on, and receive a NFPA standards directory and the Journal, plus enroll in a Code Section such as Life Safety.

I guess this is a real thing? Not sure why they would be sending me stuff.

Is anyone else an NFPA member? Is it worth the $13.75 every month? Is this something that is good to do?

    Thanks,

    Jim Conrad

    Yes real deal

questionable, not sure what you get for the money, excpet discounts on the books they sell, whcih your department should have or should have access to already.

If you are not looking at nfpa standards alot, not much more value.

They just like other organazations are trying to get paying members.

That is likely for the membership and access to the public "read-only" pdf view of the standards, but the All Codes Access is around $1000/ yr. Pretty sure the $13.75 is just for the membership ID allowing you access to purchase things at the membership discount. We have a membership for the purposes of purchasing Fire Prevention materials and Code books and then we also have the All Access for Code Enforcement.

It might be a good deal for you. I am wondering if the NFPA is still the "good old boys club" it used to be? Maybe. Maybe not. If nothing else it might help you with future promotions and such? Kinda like the Fire Chief offering one to join "Toast Masters" and other possibly benefitable (sp?) civic organizations? Kinda like getting "your ticket punched"? Just me. HB of CJ (old coot)

I was thinking most of the codes you might need would be available online free.

I have likely been getting the same stuff from them. In my case, I think it is related to registering on the NFPA website so I can view the documents for free. As I recall, I had to give them name, address, department, rank, etc, etc, which I don't normally like to do but it was one of those things where it wouldn't allow you to leave it blank and still register...

No, I have not sent them any money and have no plans to.

You should not be spending any of your own hard earned cash for NFPA stuff, your department should be supplying anything like that. Take that amount and add as much more as you can and add it to your 401K account.

My department has the two Chief officers enrolled, so anytime I need to access documents I simply use their log-in.

They have been sending me membership applications every 3 months for the past two years. While I fully understand the value of NFPA, especially on the prevention and public education side, the $165 a year simply isn't worth it to me.

I get crap from AARP too, and I haven't given them a dime either. That money is better spent on beer.
