Do private departments exist? I know
some airports have their own departments
and etc, etc, but are there "privately
owned" departments that work off contract
for like a city or a county?

I know where I used to live the city
contracted a private ambulance service
for all calls.

Rural Metro provides contract fire service for several communities.

That is the only one I know of though.

I know my department And most are the departments in my county (all volunteer) are considered "private departments", We have a contract with our town and another contract with the county(for rural areas) which states the we provide fire protection for a certain amount of money each year.

In this part of Ohio, there are several private fire "companies" in various forms. Most are organizations where a township will purchase the equipment and the "company" staffs it. The members of the company are NOT employed by the township.

There are other companies where the equipment and the staffing are owned by the company who contracts with the township(s) to provide service. Often, these organizations have an oversight Board of Directors that often consists of a trustee from each township served, but they are still separate from the townships.

Our volunteer department is a not for profit corporation. Under Iowa law it constitutes a private business. There is a board of directors who are self electing and have no direct tie to a political entity other than the fire protection contracts.

I also thought that Overland Park KS was a not for profit corp fire department, at least at one time.

Anyone know for sure? Any one? Bueller? Bueller?

The Elk Grove Township FD is a private company that provides fire service for a few square miles near O'Hare Airport. No association with O Hare or the City of Chicago.
