I just finished up applying to a few volunteer departments around my area.
Assuming everything goes well and they want me, are there any words of advice for someone with basically no experience but an intense urge to learn? I want to know how to get the most out of everything that I hear.

Walk in like you own the place. Give tips to the chief about how things could be run smoother - brag about how things were better "at your old station". Walk around with your hands in your pockets - other people can do the work, you are far too busy as supervisor. Denigrate anyone older than you as a dinosaur and anyone younger as a young pup. Call any women there "sweetcheeks" and tell them to git their arse in the kitchen and make sammitches for the REAL FIREMEN. When the pager goes off, shove others out of the way to make first truck, and always *always* assume you'll be the nozzleman.

I have some other tips and tricks, but don't want to completely show my hand. If you need any more advice, feel free to hit me up - I'm [email protected]

          1) LISTEN, not only will you learn the job but you will learn who to trust and who you can count on not only on the job, but off as well
          2) Ask questions, you are far better off asking questions if you don't understand than winging it, screwing it up and trying to explain why you did that afterwards
          3) First up and working, last to sit down, is always a good motto during your time as a rookie, actually through your career really
          4) Train as much as possible, take every class offered to you, BUT don't let that turn you into a 2/20 firefighter (a guy with 2 years on the job and acting like he has 20)
          5) Have fun, yes it is a dirty, dangerous, and sometimes thankless job, but it can be fun at times with the right people

Good luck and welcome to the Brotherhood.
Crazy, but that's how it goes

105- Very funny. Good to know what to avoid.

            FyredUp- Also great advice

This is all exactly the kind of thing that I wanted to know. What to avoid and what to strive for. What should I expect being the rookie? I will obviously be the bottom of the food chain but in terms of jobs, treatment, responsibilities? Thanks again!

Dude, you're getting kind of creepy stalkerish here. Maybe find some midget porn to take your mind off things?

Also, you should probably put this in the 'faces behind the names' thread.

This is ... wow. You're an interesting piece of work there, sunshine. Illiterate, uneducated mouthbreather and you seem to expect that anyone believes you're anything other than a bored 13 year old online?

This will be the last time you and I talk because.... well, I don't really know how to respond to grunts and feces flinging. However, it may warm the cockles of your heart to make me feel like the boy in this picture.

                    hugs and kisses, sweetums <3
