In NY, there are arson dogs in some counties, sponsored by the County Arson or Fire Investigfation Team.....while not a traditional firehouse dog, I guess in todays' world they would qualify.
NYS OFPC also has trained canines for arson investigation, they 'belong' to a handler and work solely with that person.

We have an arson dog. It is ATF certified I believe it is considered an ATF agent (kick the dog same as hitting a LEO.)
Takes a few months for the dog and handler to get trained and certified. Has to be exercised daily (sniff for the bad stuff) and rewarded. We have a four page SOP on the pooch that basically says don't feed it or play with it (it's reward is play time.) Plus a bunch of other stuff...
It's not your keep at the station dog. It is a highly trained animal that requires a lot of care and special treatment. (I think the dog had better negotiators than we did during our last contract.)

Our Chief has a border collie that she brings to the station a lot. It's kind of become the unofficial firehouse dog.

One of our stations had a mutt that started just hanging out one day. It was dubbed "Brown Dog" and was around so much, it even ended up getting its own accountability tag. It died about 5 years ago.
My station has a squirrel that hangs out day and night.
One of the stations about an hour west of us has a cat.
As for arson dog, we have one as part of our regional arson detection team as well.Career Fire Captain
