  • Glasses?

Hello all. I am trying to join a local volunteer company near me, and I got to thinking, "What happens when I have to wear a helmet and I wear glasses?" Should I invest in contacts? Are contacts worse to use than glasses? Basically anything you can tell me on this would help.
Thanks to all who reply in advance.

No contacts. If you can't well enough without your glasses then you have a problem.

Also do a search in here as this was talked to death awhile back.

Being a good guy, I did it for you..

Depending on how poor your vision is, you may be able to reasonably work without your glasses on. I work with a couple guys who do this.

Another option is to get an insert for the SCBA mask. Basically, it's a special frame that your eye doctor will put lenses in and it gets attached inside the mask. I think all of the brands have some sort of "kit" that would allow you to do this. We have a few that use this option at work.

As for contacts, there really wouldn't be a problem there as long as you don't have problems with wearing them in general. Personally, I've been wearing contacts my entire career and pretty much with no problems. I'm pretty much blind without them and used to have issues at night when I had to take them out. No longer a problem since I've been wearing extended wear contacts for 10+ years now. Only need to take them out every 1-2 months.

            ^^

            That is what I use.

I have a separate case I carry in my gear to hold my glasses when I'm masked up. It's hard so it can take a bit of an impact.

Used glasses for years and never had any problems. Used recspecs in my mask, and I know a lot of guys who used contacts and never had problems.

I don't wear glasses, but I can whip up a pretty mean set of beer goggles. It's a curse, I know.

Do you need a prescription for that?

I wear glasses most of the time, and tried using the glasses insert in my SCOTT Mask, however at my new station we just grab a mask off the truck, we don't have them assigned to us so there is no guarantee I will always have the same mask, which means I would have to swap the glasses in and out of my mask which gets annoying.

Now I just leave my glasses in the truck in a "hard" glasses case and don't wear them during a call where I mask up. Fortunately my eyesight is good enough that I can do that, although most of the time I find if I am wearing a mask, conditions are too crappy to see anyway

                        Hope this helps

I used a hard video cassete case for my mask glasses, just left it in the pocket of my coat....got on the rig, slipped them into the mask, and put my glasses inside the case, which I left stuffed down in between the seats so that no one would step on them. Later on we got assigned our own masks.
