I'm not trying to **** anybody off here but I'm just sitting around pondering the thought one of my professors was talking of today. He stated that with the fire retardant materials that are coming out now a days and who knows what else in the future that one day fire fighters will not fight fires much or at all. Now I understand that they are still a lot of old buildings out there and they will remain there but I am just thinking down the line. We came across this subject when he asked what we wanted to do and I said I wanted to be a firefighter. I guess he was maybe trying to make me second guess it(which im not) or if he was just discussing. But anyways does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Plastics burn hotter and nastier (toxicity) than the natural materials they have replaced. Some products MAY be more fire retardant, but just think about how many things are now made from plastic where they used to be wood, metal, whatever. Whole lotta burning gonna continue until long after we're retired.
BTW, in my experience "Professors" are some of the STUPIDEST people alive.Opinions expressed are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of the Philadelphia Fire Department and/or IAFF Local 22. -
There is no way for the firefighting profession to become extinct. Why? Because we do so much. Even if the number of fires goes down, fire departments do alot more than fight fires. Depending on your jurisdiction, fire departments often provide the following services:
1. EMS
2. Rescue (auto extrication, confined space, water rescue, etc.)
3. Hazardous Material response
4. Inspections
5. ARFF
6. Wildland firefighting
and a host of other services to the communities we protect. Firefighting has become specialized. You cannot take anyone off the street, like in past years, to do the work of the fire department. You have to possess certifications, participate in training and other qualifications. Everything is run to standards and the fire service is no different.Comment

I didn't quite think of those types of materials. I was being narrow minded I guess by thinking of only materials such as the fire retardant sheetrock and other building materials. I couldn't agree with you both more about professors! Sometimes I wonder why they even get paid lol.Comment

I'm still waiting on a flying car. They were promised for the year 2000....I am now a past chief and the views, opinions, and comments are mine and mine alone. I do not speak for any department or in any official capacity. Although, they would be smart to listen to me.
