  • 17th Busiest

According to the State Fire Marshal's Report for 2010 my combo department is the 17th busiest in the state.

Looking at the names ahead of us on the report, I beleive that we would rank at the busiest non-all career department.

    And yes, I am bragging.

17th for runs, but look on the bright side, you are number one for most foundations saved.

Actually only about 10 were alarm trips.

We probably did 50 good intent.

                84% were EMS.

                  Why? You don't trust me???

Is this department total, or company total. 1600 is around the # of runs our slow companies get by themselves each year...

                            I do.

                            But the department doesn't.

I have no clue what that has to do with our number of responses.

However, even if we did decide to handle them cold, it would still be counted as a response.

By the way, since you may or may not be from down around there, is Opoleus (spelling) a all-career or combo department?

I am always amused by folks who love to assert how busy their department is. I'll concede that a high pace of activity should equate to experienced personnel who know and do their jobs and that is, in fact, something to be very proud of.

In 1997 at a Fire-Rescue Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, I had the honor of meeting the then-Chief of Special Operations for the Chicago Fire Department, John Eversole. If you had the opportunity to meet Chief Eversole, he was a towering man - someone who it was truly an honor to stand next to and visit with. He was someone that had talked the talk and walked the walk in a well-known and well-respected FD. At the time, I was working for a small, career fire department in the New Orleans area and told Chief Eversole how much I'd really like to work for a large, career, urban, and busy department like Chicago. He wished me luck with pursuing my dream but made the following comment as we parted ways. He said that no matter what size your organization is, no matter how busy or slow, and regardless of your status as a career or volunteer member of your department, your obilgation to your community and to your fellow firefighters is the same. Be the best firefighter you can be because everyone else is expecting you to be just that.

No truer words have ever been spoken.

                              RIP Chief Eversole.
