Im not new to reading these forums.I have read and listened to many knowagable people and this is why I decided to join and ask for some simple advice. Quick run down of where I come from....A full volunteer fire department of a population of about 1200 with 13 sq. miles of district. averageing about 475 to 500 calls a year. Ive been a member for 8 years and the last 2 Ive held a rank of LT. Ive now been informed that in January Im moving up to captian, and quite frankly a little nervous about it.I guess im taking this more serious than the LT spot because I know have officers under me and not just firemen. Just looking for some tips and advice on moving on up. Thanks for listening

Congratulations on your upcoming promotion. Check out the Career Forum. Lots of great advice on this subject. Take your job seriously, not yourself. Your crews are already used to you being in a leadership position. Keep doing what you've been doing. Just do it better.

Getting promoted from Lieutenant to Captain in a volunteer department is like changing your underwear every day!
There isn't a dimes worth of difference in the position, unless you guys run the show hard and fast by military organization rules and regulations.
You still going to do the job as you did or was suppose to as a Lieutenant. You may have a few more duties thrushed upon you, but having been a Lieutenant for 2 years, you should do just fine.
Rescue 101 - I'll have a Cap'n and coke as well!!Stay Safe and Well Out There....

The difference between Captain and Lieutenant...
Lieutenants have one "plunger" on their collar pins. They deal with company level crap.
Captains have two plungers. They deal with their company's crap as well as the crqp the Lieutenants can't handle.
I know.. been there, done that... now I have 3 gold plungers.. figure it out!"The education of a firefighter and the continued education of a firefighter is what makes "real" firefighters. Continuous skill development is the core of progressive firefighting. We learn by doing and doing it again and again, both on the training ground and the fireground."

So this means you are dealing with a lot more crap every day, huh?
The guy(s) with the 4 and 5 plungers deal with crap that the three plungers can't handle too!!Stay Safe and Well Out There....

The fire department is a lot like a totem pole.. the chief sits on top, looks down and sees nothing but smiling faces...
The rookie with the least seniority looks up and sees nothing but @$$holes..."The education of a firefighter and the continued education of a firefighter is what makes "real" firefighters.
