  • Question regarding first fire

    Hey all,
Looking for a little advice. I am currently a rookie VFF in a combo department. I completed my academy earlier in the year and last week I got my first fire call (one that I got to pull hose and be on the nozzle). It was truly an amazing experience to finally put all that training to real life use.

Second man on the line was one of my instructors. So I was wondering if there is a tradition in the fire service, gift or something along those lines, that a rookie gives to whoever was on the line with them on their first fire.

    Thanks.

You did not get him hurt or killed, I think that counts as his gift.

He probably wouldn't mind a grape nehi, or a beer.
Train to fight the fires you fight.

Yeah sure, First anything means you bring cake and ice cream or steaks to everyone on the department!!

Tradition on my department is "first anything = ice cream". Something that says a simple thank you would be a nice gesture... but usually isn't required.

Just be glad that you had a successful experience and no one was killed.

There is no tradition for this occasion, except perhaps, a six pack.

Nothing that I stated should give the impression that I endorse drinking adult beverages in massive quatities. Just don't get SF'd.

You're supposed to choreograph and perform an interpretive dance number.
Logic and proportion have fallen sloppy dead.

On it, I've picked out a pretty feathery costume already.

Ice Cream is the bare minimum. I'd cook a whole dinner for the whole crew, plus the truck if they vented for you.

                    This is what really matters.

Now don't be a loser, please go clean your gear.

I see no reason with modern technology that these cannot be combined.
